About WABI:
WABI TV5 first signed on in January 1953, becoming Maine's first television station. It has long been the news leader for eastern and central Maine. The station is located at 35 Hildreth Street in Bangor and has a bureau in Waterville, Maine.
Job Summary/Description:
Think you've got what it takes to keep Maine's first television station on the air? Join WABI's 10-week paid Engineering Internship and get real, hands-on experience in broadcast RF, AV, and IT systems with a front-row seat to full-time opportunities across Gray Media's 113 stations nationwide.
The Training Program:
General Responsibilities:
Are you ready to stop reading about broadcast technology and actually live it? Do you see a complex technical glitch and think, "Challenge accepted"? At WABI-TV, our Engineering Intern doesn't sit on the bench; you're in the game from day one. As part of Gray Media's high-octane, 10-week paid internship program, you'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with our experienced engineering team, keeping Maine's leading news station on the air.
Own the role: Step into a real broadcast engineering position and take on hands-on tasks that directly support live newscasts, studio productions, and post-production operations that reach thousands of Mainers every single day
Get your hands dirty (literally): Assist with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of broadcast RF, AV, and IT systems and software from studio audio/video systems and routing to networking infrastructure and transmission equipment
Support live operations: Help ensure all equipment is operating correctly before and during live event broadcasts - learning to identify, correct, and document technical problems with the appropriate sense of urgency
Drive the technology forward: Support IT-based workflows, digital systems, and streaming platforms across baseband, RF, and IP-based systems.
Keep us compliant: Learn FCC operational standards and broadcast compliance practices.
Keep us on the air: Assist with preventative maintenance, equipment inspections, and documentation of configuration changes that keep our operation running at peak performance
Build your future: Position yourself at the front of the line for full-time engineering opportunities within Gray Media's network of 113 stations across the U.S.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Current enrollment: You're a college Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Broadcast Technology, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
A "doer" mindset: You aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves, pick up a tool, and tackle a technical challenge head-on. You're here to work, not just watch
Tech curiosity: You have a foundational understanding of professional audio/video equipment, computer networking, and operating systems, and a hunger to learn more
Strong work ethic: You bring urgency, organization, a positive attitude, and a "can-do" spirit to every shift, and you work well with others across departments and disciplines
Reliability: You're ready to commit to the full 10-week program, the 25-hour weekly schedule, and the occasional flexible hour that a live, 24/7 broadcast environment demands
Physical readiness: Ability to perform basic physical tasks, including bending and lifting to 50 lbs; occasional work on ladders or in confined spaces may be required
Passion for local media: You care about the community and want to see firsthand how local television technology makes a real difference every single day
• A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
