Job description

Infrastructure Specialist Intern

 Location: Brantford


The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity development to First Nations communities in Ontario.  By offering a wide range of specialized services and expertise, OFNTSC helps to enhance the quality of life, promote self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within these communities.


We seek a highly motivated Infrastructure Specialist Intern to join our team at OFNTSC.  Under the guidance of the Infrastructure Supervisor, the intern will shadow housing inspection services to gain hands-on experience within Indigenous communities.  The internship will involve job shadowing, exposure to housing programs, and guidance to obtaining Ontario Building Code certification for the future as a building inspector.


These tasks must be executed in alignment with the culture and values of OFNTSC while maintaining strict confidentiality.


Responsibilities: 

  • Job Shadow while inspections are conducted for CMHC First Nation Housing Programs, including Section 95, Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP), Physical Condition Reporting (PCR), and Code Compliance Inspections utilizing the OBC and NBC and other applicable standard and regulations.
  • Assist in the preparation, organization, and documentation of detailed inspection reports, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with reporting standards.
  • Assist with housing plan review under the supervision of an Infrastructure Specialist (IS) to ensure compliance with code requirements.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the Infrastructure Specialist in the execution of annual and periodic inspections of community facilities, while developing an understanding of Asset Condition Reporting System (ACRS) methodologies and associated technical terminology.
  • Conduct research on emerging construction technologies, methodologies, and industry best practices to support capacity development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop a working knowledge of protocols, procedures, and engagement practices when interacting with First Nation communities, government agencies, and regulatory bodies.
  • Support capacity-building initiatives by assisting First Nation communities in developing skills and knowledge related to infrastructure planning, maintenance, and management.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and organization of client records, inspection data, and evaluation documentation in accordance with established procedures and confidentiality requirements.


Qualifications:

  • College Diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architectural Technology/Technician, or another related specialty.
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario or National Building Code is considered an asset.
  • Construction Experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with an Indigenous organization and understanding of First Nations cultures is considered a significant asset.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also demonstrating independence and accountability when completing assigned tasks.
  • Detail-oriented professional with a keen eye for accuracy and quality in work output, ensuring high standards are consistently maintained.
  • Adaptable and committed to continuous learning, with a solid understanding of technical infrastructure terminology and a willingness to undertake additional training as required.


Conditions:

  • Reliable and insured vehicle and a Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license.
  • Some out-of-town traveling is required through the province of Ontario.
  • Candidate must be a First Nation or Inuit. Proof of eligibility will be required.
  • Within two years of hiring, pass the 7 OMMAH Housing and Small Buildings Plans Examiner/Building Inspector courses outlined below:
