What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, you typically need a foundation in computer engineering principles, programming languages like C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), hardware description languages, and basic circuit design tools is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly help interns stand out. These competencies enable effective contribution to engineering projects, smooth collaboration with teams, and rapid learning in a dynamic work environment.

What types of projects or tasks can a Computer Engineering Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Engineering Intern, you can anticipate working on a mix of hardware and software projects, often supporting ongoing development or testing efforts. Typical tasks may include contributing to circuit design, debugging embedded systems, writing or optimizing code, and assisting with prototype validation. Interns frequently collaborate with senior engineers, participate in team meetings, and may be given independent assignments to develop technical and problem-solving skills. The internship environment is usually fast-paced, offering exposure to real-world engineering challenges and valuable mentorship opportunities.

What does a Computer Engineering Intern do?

A Computer Engineering Intern assists with the design, development, testing, and maintenance of computer hardware and software systems. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers and may contribute to projects involving programming, circuit design, troubleshooting, or system optimization. Their responsibilities can include writing code, assembling hardware components, performing experiments, and documenting results. This role is designed to give students hands-on experience and help them apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering problems.

Software Engineering Intern

Kira

New York, NY • On-site

Full-time

Posted 9 days ago

Job description

Kira is building the AI-native platform for education. We’re rethinking how teaching works by pairing educators with AI systems that can generate content, evaluate student work, and provide personalized feedback at scale. Our products are used by schools, districts, and universities. We’re an early-stage company with real customers, real usage, and a small, high-ownership team.

We’re looking for exceptional fullstack engineering interns to join us for Summer 2026. You’ll work on production systems used by students and teachers, not isolated intern projects. Over 12 weeks, you’ll own and ship a meaningful piece of the product, from initial design through deployment. This role is best suited for candidates who already build things independently and want to operate at a high bar.

What You’ll Work On

Intern projects typically sit directly on critical product paths, such as:

  • AI-powered grading and feedback systems

  • Student and teacher-facing product surfaces (dashboards, workflows)

  • Internal tools used by curriculum and operations teams

  • Infrastructure supporting LLM-based features (evals, prompt iteration, reliability)

You’ll work across the stack:

  • Frontend: TypeScript, React, Next.js

  • Backend: Node, Python

  • Data: APIs, databases, system integrations

What You’ll Do

  • Own a scoped project with a clear user outcome and ship it end-to-end

  • Write production-quality code that is reviewed, tested, and deployed

  • Participate in design discussions and code reviews with the team

  • Work directly with product and design to clarify requirements and tradeoffs

  • Debug real issues and improve system reliability and performance

  • Contribute to AI-powered features where relevant to your project

What We’re Looking For

  • Candidates who already operate at a high level of independence and technical maturity

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related field (returning to school in Fall 2026)

  • Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and systems

  • Experience building and shipping non-trivial projects end-to-end

  • Comfortable working across the stack (not just frontend or backend in isolation)

  • Clear, structured thinking and strong written communication

  • Experience building fullstack applications or APIs from scratch

  • Exposure to LLMs or interest in building AI-powered systems

  • Evidence of initiative (open source, research, side projects, technical writing)

What You’ll Get

  • Ownership: You will ship meaningful product work used by real users

  • Mentorship in a high-signal environment -- small team, high standards, fast iteration

  • Exposure to product, design, and how real systems evolve

  • Return offer consideration for top-performing interns

Logistics

  • Start date: June 2026 (flexible ±2 weeks)

  • Duration: 12 weeks, full-time

  • Location: New York, NY (in-person)

  • Compensation: Competitive (discussed during process)

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. for the duration of the internship
