What does a Computer Engineering Intern do?

A Computer Engineering Intern assists with the design, development, testing, and maintenance of computer hardware and software systems. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers and may contribute to projects involving programming, circuit design, troubleshooting, or system optimization. Their responsibilities can include writing code, assembling hardware components, performing experiments, and documenting results. This role is designed to give students hands-on experience and help them apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering problems.

What is the difference between Computer Engineering Intern vs Software Engineering Intern?

AspectComputer Engineering InternSoftware Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsEnrolled in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related degreeEnrolled in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related degree
Work EnvironmentHardware labs, embedded systems, firmware developmentApplication development, coding, software testing
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, hardware manufacturers, embedded systems firmsSoftware companies, tech startups, IT departments

Computer Engineering Interns typically focus on both hardware and software aspects, working with embedded systems and hardware integration. In contrast, Software Engineering Interns primarily work on software development and coding. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds but differ in their work environments and industry focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, you typically need a foundation in computer engineering principles, programming languages like C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), hardware description languages, and basic circuit design tools is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly help interns stand out. These competencies enable effective contribution to engineering projects, smooth collaboration with teams, and rapid learning in a dynamic work environment.

What types of projects or tasks can a Computer Engineering Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Engineering Intern, you can anticipate working on a mix of hardware and software projects, often supporting ongoing development or testing efforts. Typical tasks may include contributing to circuit design, debugging embedded systems, writing or optimizing code, and assisting with prototype validation. Interns frequently collaborate with senior engineers, participate in team meetings, and may be given independent assignments to develop technical and problem-solving skills. The internship environment is usually fast-paced, offering exposure to real-world engineering challenges and valuable mentorship opportunities.

Job description

Electrical Engineering Internship

About Us:
At Solutions AEC, weโ€™re a design-build engineering firm with a strong focus on delivering innovative and efficient MEP systems for our clients. We take pride in exceeding client expectations by blending advanced technologies with thoughtful, cost-effective design. We are seeking talented individuals to join our team as we continue expanding our virtual design and construction capabilities, including the integration of AI into our workflows.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
As an Electrical Engineering Intern with SAEC, you will gain hands-on experience working on a variety of exciting projects. Youโ€™ll support our senior engineers and designers in tasks that range from conceptual design to construction documentation. Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with electrical system design and layout for commercial and industrial projects
  • Performing calculations for power distribution, lighting, and other building systems
  • Utilizing design software (Revit and others) to produce electrical drawings
  • Supporting the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team in 3D modeling and coordination
  • Assisting with technical reports, research, and equipment specifications
  • Collaborating with mechanical, plumbing, and other engineering disciplines to ensure a fully coordinated approach
  • Learning about building codes, standards, and energy-efficient design practices

What Youโ€™ll Learn:

  • Electrical System Design: Gain hands-on experience in designing and laying out electrical systems for commercial and industrial buildings, including power distribution and lighting.
  • Software Proficiency: Learn to use industry-standard design tools like Revit to create and update electrical drawings.
  • Collaboration & Coordination: Work closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure cohesive, coordinated project designs.
  • Technical Knowledge: Develop an understanding of electrical calculations, building codes, standards, and sustainable design practices.
  • Technology Integration: Explore advanced technologies such as 3D modeling and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) systems and learn how AI is integrated into engineering workflows.
  • Professional Development: Improve communication, problem-solving, and project management skills in a real-world engineering environment.

These objectives aim to provide interns with a well-rounded understanding of electrical engineering in the context of MEP design.

What Weโ€™re Looking For:
We are searching for driven individuals with a passion for engineering, innovation, and continuous improvement. Youโ€™ll be a good fit if you:

  • Are currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Have basic knowledge of electrical system design and calculations
  • Are familiar with Revit or other related design software (preferred but not required)
  • Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Are detail-oriented and eager to learn
  • Can work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Are passionate about sustainable and energy-efficient building practices

Why SAEC?
