What Is a Computer Engineer?

A computer engineer designs, researches, tests, and develops computer equipment and software such as circuit boards, chips, routers, and application programs. Computer engineers analyze complex equipment and systems to understand the best way to improve it. They create new types of information technology devices and use logic and reasoning to hone in on goals, test assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems. Engineers often work in teams and have to be able to communicate with other types of engineers, including non-technical team members. Computer engineers make sure that components fit together properly and function according to the latest software developments.

What are computer engineers?

Computer engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer hardware and software systems. They work at the intersection of electrical engineering and computer science, focusing on how computer systems function and how they can be improved. Their roles can involve creating microprocessors, designing circuit boards, developing embedded systems, and optimizing software for hardware performance. Computer engineers play a crucial role in advancing technology across industries, from consumer electronics to aerospace and healthcare.

What are common challenges computer engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Computer engineers often collaborate with software developers, hardware designers, and project managers, which can present challenges in aligning technical requirements and communication styles. Ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of system limitations and integration points is crucial, as miscommunication can lead to project delays or rework. Staying adaptable and proactively clarifying expectations helps computer engineers navigate these collaborative environments successfully.

Job Description

This project role involves programming videogames in the Unity3D engine as well as managing other team members and overseeing project progress. All content development takes place in the Unity3D videogame engine, which can run C# or Javascript code. This means we need a programmer with experience specifically developing for Unity in one of those languages. The programming role will include writing scripts for managing game flow. For example, a game may begin in a tutorial phase, then switch to a practice phase, then switch to Level 1, then to Level 2, and so forth. The game's code must be organized in such a way that it is efficient, effective, and easy to understand. Other types of programming will include character animations, game object behavior, and game balancing. This position will involve rapidly prototyping many videogame ideas into simple proof-of-concept builds for virtual reality platforms. It requires a skilled programmer to rapidly create such games. Such programming requires years of hands-on programming experience as a game developer.

The second major role required by this position is that of a project manager. Full videogames require highly coordinated teams to create. Such teams may comprise artists, programmers, animators, 3D modelers, and others. The job of the project manager is to keep all the team members coordinated and ensure that the project is on schedule. This involves setting timelines, assigning jobs, and accurately estimating how long development will take. The candidate must be familiar with Agile development and must be familiar with every part of game development, from proof-of-concept to final bug testing and polish. Such a role requires many years of experience in the game industry. The current project has a small team, but we expect the team to grow in the future and it is necessary to hire someone capable of overseeing multiple development teams working on concurrent projects.
