What is a computer engineer?

A computer engineer designs, researches, tests, and develops computer equipment and software such as circuit boards, chips, routers, and application programs. Computer engineers analyze complex equipment and systems to understand the best way to improve it. They create new types of information technology devices and use logic and reasoning to hone in on goals, test assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems. Engineers often work in teams and have to be able to communicate with other types of engineers, including non-technical team members. Computer engineers make sure that components fit together properly and function according to the latest software developments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineer?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and hardware/software design, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as C/C++ or Python), circuit design tools, and industry certifications like CompTIA or Cisco are highly valuable. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that set top performers apart. These abilities ensure that computer engineers can design, implement, and optimize systems that meet technical requirements and business goals.

What are common challenges computer engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Computer engineers often collaborate with software developers, hardware designers, and project managers, which can present challenges in aligning technical requirements and communication styles. Ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of system limitations and integration points is crucial, as miscommunication can lead to project delays or rework. Staying adaptable and proactively clarifying expectations helps computer engineers navigate these collaborative environments successfully.

What is the difference between Computer Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectComputer EngineerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering or related field; certifications like Cisco, CompTIABachelor's in Computer Science or Software Engineering; certifications like Microsoft, AWS
Work EnvironmentDesigning hardware, embedded systems, and software integration in labs or officesWriting, testing, and maintaining software applications in offices or remote setups
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, manufacturing, telecommunications, embedded systemsIT firms, software companies, startups, enterprise software development

Computer Engineers focus on both hardware and software systems, often working on embedded systems and hardware integration. Software Developers primarily create and maintain software applications. While their roles overlap in programming, Computer Engineers have a broader scope including hardware design, whereas Software Developers specialize in software solutions.

About the Opportunity

Our client, a global engineering and technology manufacturer, is seeking a Software Systems Staff Engineer to join their advanced product development team.

This position focuses on the development of embedded software and system architecture for highly engineered electromechanical products. You'll work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams developing software that controls motors, sensors, valves, actuators, power electronics, and electronic control systems used in demanding real-world applications.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced embedded software engineer looking to take ownership of software architecture, requirements development, system integration, and validation while collaborating with global engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software for advanced electromechanical control systems.
  • Define software system requirements and technical specifications.
  • Support overall software architecture and system design.
  • Develop software features from concept through release.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineers, Applications Engineers, and Hardware Engineers throughout development.
  • Translate system requirements into software requirements and functional specifications.
  • Support software modeling, simulation, integration, verification, validation, and testing.
  • Lead software design reviews and technical discussions.
  • Define software qualification and validation plans.
  • Develop system-level and unit-level test strategies.
  • Support SIL and HIL testing activities.
  • Interface with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and customers.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable quality, regulatory, and functional safety requirements.
  • Support software release management and configuration control.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of embedded software or embedded systems development experience.
  • Experience with software requirements, architecture, design, integration, or verification.
  • Experience with requirements management tools.
  • Familiarity with Polarion, Jira, Bitbucket, or similar development platforms.
  • Experience developing software test plans and validation strategies.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle and configuration management.
  • Experience working closely with hardware engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of hardware/software interfaces.
  • Experience with SIL and HIL testing.
  • Familiarity with functional safety principles, risk assessments, or FMEA.
  • Basic knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink or model-based development.
  • Understanding of motors, sensors, actuators, power electronics, or embedded control systems.
  • Strong communication and project leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of embedded software development experience.
  • Functional Safety (ISO 26262 or similar) experience.
  • Cybersecurity experience for embedded systems.
  • Experience with controls simulation or powertrain software.
  • Experience with harsh-environment electronic systems.
  • Familiarity with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, multimeters, and electrical testing equipment.
  • Experience writing Statements of Work (SOWs).

Ideal Background

We're seeking engineers who have developed embedded software for products such as:

  • Automotive control systems
  • Electronic Control Units (ECUs)
  • Turbochargers
  • Power electronics
  • Electric motors
  • Industrial embedded controllers
  • Sensors and actuators
  • Powertrain systems
  • Heavy equipment
  • Aerospace electronics
  • Off-highway equipment
  • Industrial automation products

This is not a PLC programming, MES, ERP, web development, or IT software role. The ideal candidate has experience writing embedded software that directly controls hardware and electromechanical systems.
