What is a computer engineer internship?

A Computer Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in computer engineering. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with tasks such as software development, hardware design, testing, and troubleshooting. The internship provides hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to real-world projects, helping interns develop technical skills and industry knowledge. It also allows interns to network with professionals and can often lead to full-time employment after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a computer engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Computer Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that may involve software development, hardware testing, or assisting with system integration tasks. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, participate in team meetings, and contribute to debugging or documentation efforts. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, offering plenty of opportunities to learn new technologies and engineering best practices. Interns are also encouraged to ask questions and seek mentorship, which helps in building both technical and professional skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer architecture, programming languages such as C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with development environments, version control systems like Git, and basic hardware or software debugging tools is often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn quickly are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, collaborate with team members, and rapidly acquire new technical knowledge essential for professional growth.

What is the difference between Computer Engineer Internship vs Software Developer Internship?

Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Computer Engineer Internships focus on hardware, embedded systems, and firmware, while Software Developer Internships emphasize coding and software applications. Both roles often require related technical skills but serve different industry needs and environments.

What do computer engineer interns do?

Computer engineer interns assist with designing, developing, and testing hardware and software systems. They often work on projects involving circuit design, coding in languages like C or Python, and using tools such as CAD software or oscilloscopes under supervision. Interns gain practical experience in engineering principles and technical problem-solving in a professional environment.

Which internship is best for computer engineering students?

The best internship for computer engineering students typically involves roles in software development, hardware design, or systems engineering, offering hands-on experience with programming languages like C++ or Python, and familiarity with tools such as Git or Linux. Competitive internships often require strong technical skills, relevant coursework, and sometimes certifications like Cisco or CompTIA, and they provide valuable industry exposure and networking opportunities.

Job description

Teleoperation Software Engineering Internship
Location: Houston, Texas or Pensacola, Florida
Duration: 12-16 weeks
The Mission
At Persona AI, the Teleoperation Team is the bridge between human intuition and artificial intelligence. We aren't just building a remote control; we are building a high-fidelity, low-latency "nervous system" for our humanoid fleet.
As a Teleoperation Intern, you will work across our entire hardware and software stack, integrating firmware, backend infrastructure, retargeting, and XR interfaces. You will solve the "unreliable transport" problem, ensuring our robots move fluidly even when the network doesn't want to cooperate. If you're obsessed with sub-millisecond latency, real-time rendering, and the future of robotics, we want you on the front lines.
What You'll Do
  • Architect Immersive Interfaces: Help develop our primary XR application used by operators to control humanoid robots.
  • Optimize Data Pipelines: Build and tune low-latency streaming protocols (Rust) that function over real-world WiFi, Wired and bluetooth networks.
  • Bridge the Stack: Develop software that interfaces directly with hardware SDKs for robot sensing, motion capture, and control.
  • Innovate in XR: Build frontend systems for AR devices (Android/Embedded Linux) using OpenXR and frameworks like StereoKit or Unity.
  • Scale and Monitor: Use Python to build test harnesses and automation scripts, ensuring our fleet remains reliable as it grows.

What We're Looking For
  • Education: Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related technical field.
  • Coding Prowess: Strong fundamentals in Rust and Python. Familiarity with C++ is a plus.
  • 3D & Networking Fluency: A solid grasp of 3D geometry (kinematics) and networking basics (TCP/UDP, bandwidth optimization).
  • Systems Thinker: Experience working in Linux environments and a passion for navigating complex open-source codebases.
  • The "Builder" Mindset: You've built things-whether it's a game in XR, a custom drone, or a contribution to an open-source library.

Bonus Points
  • Experience with Unreal Engine (Blueprints/C++) or OpenXR.
  • Knowledge of custom shader writing or GPU profiling.
  • Familiarity with modern build systems like Nix or Bazel.
  • A history of contributing to open-source projects.
