Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with tasks such as software development, hardware design, testing, and troubleshooting. The internship provides hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to real-world projects, helping interns develop technical skills and industry knowledge. It also allows interns to network with professionals and can often lead to full-time employment after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a computer engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Computer Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that may involve software development, hardware testing, or assisting with system integration tasks. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, participate in team meetings, and contribute to debugging or documentation efforts. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, offering plenty of opportunities to learn new technologies and engineering best practices. Interns are also encouraged to ask questions and seek mentorship, which helps in building both technical and professional skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineer intern, and why are they important?

Engineering Rotation Program
Are you a versatile engineer looking to master the entire lifecycle of a product? Our Engineering Rotation Program is a high-impact professional development track designed to build a world-class technical foundation. Over the course of the program, you will move beyond the desk to gain hands-on experience in high-tech design centers, heavy-duty foundries, and advanced manufacturing floors.
The Program Experience
This isn't a "shadowing" program-it's an immersion. You will be officially hosted by the Innovation Center within our New Product Development group, but your journey will take you across our multi-divisional operations to learn how we build from the ground up.
At The Dixon Group, we value the contributions of our Military Veterans and proudly employ our nation's heroes. Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
What You'll Do:
  • Focus on SolidWorks mastery, manual machining, and part fabrication. This initial phase serves as an evaluation of technical suitability and program fit.
  • Deep dive into division-specific engineering and production environments.
  • Tackle the unique engineering requirements and technical challenges.
  • Learn the "heart of the metal" - casting design and metal chemistry.
  • Master advanced machining processes and rigorous quality control standards.

Mentorship & Growth
  • Dedicated Guidance: At every stop, you'll be assigned a Division-Level Mentor to provide technical coaching and ensure you're hitting your milestones.
  • Leadership Visibility: Your progress will be reviewed regularly by a committee of Engineering Managers
  • Upon successful completion, we aim to place you in a permanent engineering role on one of our teams.

What We're Looking For:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related) is required. Recent and upcoming graduates are strongly encouraged to apply!
  • 2 years of relevant experience in product design and development (industrial manufacturing is a huge plus!). We value your internships, co-ops, extensive senior-level academic projects, and research lab experience-these all count!
  • A Motivated Self-Starter: You're capable of working under minimal supervision (once you're up to speed) and can help direct the activities of technical associates.
  • A True Team Player: You thrive in a team-based culture and possess great communication skills to effectively work with Engineering, Sales, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing.
  • An Organized Problem-Solver: You are highly motivated, organized, and have strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable with MS Office, and experience with Solidworks (or other CAD software) is a big plus.

What We Offer:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family
  • Competitive salary
  • Bonus programs
  • 401K retirement plan
  • Training opportunities
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Paid vacation, PTO, and holidays
