Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Structural Engineering Intern for our transportation department in the Roanoke, VA office. As an intern in the transportation department, you will assist in the design and inspection of various highway structures.

This position is expected to begin Summer 2027.

The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform assignments requiring application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria to carry out engineering tasks.
  • Prepare engineering related calculations.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and cost estimates.
  • Review shop drawings.
  • Assist in the inspection of bridges, culverts, and tunnels.
  • Prepare details for construction drawings using CAD software.
  • Work under the supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or in another related field and must have completed at least 1 year of study. Candidates who have graduated with a Bachelor's Degree and plan to continue with the Master's Degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor's degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completed courses related to statics, strength of materials, introductory steel design, and introductory reinforced concrete design.
  • Ability to follow procedures and pay attention to detail.
  • Good written and oral communications skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency in developing calculations using software like Excel or Mathcad.
  • Interest in bridge design is desired.

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which incudes in office work in Roanoke, VA. The selected candidate must be available to work in Roanoke, VA on a scheduled basis.
