Staff Geotechnical Engineers 

North Charleston, South Carolina


Duties: Performs geotechnical engineering activities. Performs or coordinates the observation of field explorations and construction projects, ensuring that work performed is consistent with project plans and specifications as well as in accordance with safety guidelines. Completes detailed, accurate field reports and assists with coordination of field exploration programs. Assists with training junior technical and technician staff. Supports project management tasks such as budget planning, general field report reviews, and proposal development. Performs small projects under the supervision of a certified professional engineer or scientist as required. Gathers field data and field samples for related projects. Coordinates samples for testing. Supports the completion of permit applications according to appropriate local, state and federal guidelines. Completes engineering analyses and/or calculations within assigned discipline. Complete complex numerical modeling analysis using PLAXIS and FLAC. Develops moderately complex conceptual models (i.e. numerical modeling, etc.) under the supervision of a licensed engineer. Prepares deliverables such as memos and reports and provides occasional quality assurance/control support. Ensures that deliverables are submitted to the project manager in a timely manner and are completed as estimated. Helps develop project-related deliverables related to GIS/CAD (Geographic Information System / Computer Aided Design) data such as maps, database organization, etc. under the supervision of a licensed engineer. Assists project team members in making basic design decisions from detailed criteria provided by the senior engineer or project manager. Assists with the generation of technical reports; completes portions of technical reports and generates figures, tables, charts, etc. This position is based at GeoEngineers' North Charleston SC worksite, but occasional remote work from home may be permitted at manager discretion. Domestic travel to project sites may be required up to 10% of the time in order to collaborate with project teams.


Requirements: Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree or the foreign equivalent in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field and 18 months of experience as an Engineer, Research/Teaching Assistant, Research Intern, or another occupation involving geotechnical /civil engineering. Experience must include 6 months using FLAC, PLAXIS, or a combination of the two to model ground response under dynamic loading conditions.

The position also requires the completion of coursework (at either an undergraduate or graduate level) covering the following subjects:

  • Geotechnical Engineering;
  • Foundation Engineering;
  • Mechanics of Materials; and
  • Either Earthquake Engineering or Soil Dynamics.

All education, training and experience may be gained concurrently. Applicants must be U.S. workers (includes U.S. citizens, permanent residents, foreign nationals granted temporary residence under one of the 1986 legalization programs, refugees, and asylees.
