Description
Under general supervision, works with utility maps as a guide to confirm the locations of water and/or wastewater lines. Responsible for making lines as requested per Sunshine 811 member operations system.
Examples of Duties
  • Performs and processes utility line locating as needed for water and wastewater infrastructure. Field verifies underground utilities beyond electronic locating devices such as hand digging, probing and excavating as necessary.
  • Corrects locations of lines on mapping as required.
  • Uses color coding to identify each specific type of utility and marks the location with color coded spray paint and flags as required.
  • Performs any other functions as deemed necessary for the operation of the utility.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the underground utility locating or construction
  • One (1) year of vocational or technical training may be substituted for one year of experience
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Position may require physical effort and lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Work requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing, and crouching, subject to inside and outside activities with weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards, and atmospheric conditions. Visual acuity is required to operate automotive equipment and Manual dexterity is required in performance of duties.
  • Must be computer literate and capable of learning computer-based preventive maintenance software.
  • Must be able to read a map for utility line locations.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Utility locating equipment and principals including but not limited to: electronic locating devices, GPR, Computer generated GIS mapping system, hand tools, shovel, post hole diggers, rake, etc. All methods and procedures used in the Damage Prevention Guide for excavators, member operations, and locators Sunshine811.
  • Ability to work safely and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful condition.
