Computer Aided Design Technology information

Is CAD design a good career?

CAD design is a viable career that involves creating detailed technical drawings using computer-aided design software, often requiring skills in engineering, architecture, or drafting. It offers opportunities in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and product development, with potential for specialization and certification to enhance job prospects.

How much do CAD technicians earn?

CAD technicians typically earn a median annual salary of around $50,000 to $65,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced technicians with certifications and advanced skills can earn higher wages. Salaries can also vary based on the complexity of projects and the use of specialized CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks.

What can I do with a computer-aided design degree?

A computer-aided design (CAD) degree prepares individuals for careers as CAD technicians, drafters, or designers in industries like architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and product development. Graduates can work with CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks, creating detailed technical drawings and models for construction, machinery, or consumer products.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Technology vs Drafting Technician?

AspectComputer Aided Design TechnologyDrafting Technician
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in CAD, CAD certificationsHigh school diploma, technical drafting certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturingArchitectural, engineering, or manufacturing settings
Industry UsageDesign and engineering industriesConstruction, architecture, manufacturing

Computer Aided Design Technology involves using advanced CAD software to create detailed 2D and 3D models, often requiring formal education and certifications. Drafting Technicians focus on producing technical drawings based on specifications, typically with technical diplomas. While both roles work in design-related environments, CAD Technologists often handle complex modeling, whereas Drafting Technicians focus on precise technical drawings. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What jobs can you do with computer-aided design?

Computer-aided design (CAD) skills open opportunities in fields such as architecture, engineering, product design, and manufacturing. Common roles include CAD technician, design engineer, drafters, and modelers, often requiring proficiency with CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. These jobs typically involve creating detailed technical drawings, 3D models, and prototypes for various industries.

Our specialties include stormwater management, erosion control, grading, paving, utilities, and site access improvements. Every project is grounded in our values of functionality, sustainability, and long-term maintainability.

As a woman-owned firm based in Seattle, we pride ourselves on strong relationships. We collaborate closely with clients, architects, contractors, and regulatory agencies to deliver civil solutions that are smart, efficient, and seamlessly integrated into the overall project. Whether we are leading or supporting a project, we prioritize feasibility, value engineering, and constructability. We work across a variety of delivery methods, including Design-Bid-Build, GCCM, Progressive Design-Build, and Design-Build.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced and motivated CAD Manager, experienced in civil engineering to lead our drafting team and oversee the development and maintenance of our CAD standards and technology. This is a hands-on leadership position that combines technical expertise, strategic thinking, and people management. The CAD Manager will ensure that our drawings meet the highest quality standards, support project delivery across the firm, and keep LPD at the forefront of industry technology.

What You Will Do:

CAD Standards and Technology

  • Manage and maintain the CAD detail library in coordination with project managers
  • Integrate new tools and technologies to improve productivity and design quality

Team Leadership and Development

  • Manage a high-performing CAD team and support recruitment and onboarding
  • Provide ongoing training, coaching, and professional development
  • Foster a collaborative, solution-focused, and positive work environment
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide clear, supportive feedback

Project and Technical Support

  • Collaborate with engineers to develop efficient and accurate CAD workflows
  • Review and approve CAD drawings for consistency with company and regulatory standard
  • Offer technical support for project teams throughout the design and construction phases
  • Manage deadlines and ensure CAD resources are effectively allocated across projects

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify areas for process optimization and enhanced efficiency
  • Stay current on CAD and design industry trends and technologies
  • Implement innovative approaches to improve team performance and project outcomes

What We Are Looking For

  • At least ten years of experience in drafting and design using AutoCAD
  • Expertise in Civil 3D, including 3D modeling and advanced design tools
  • Strong understanding of external references, layout setups, and detailed layering systems
  • Experience with surfaces, roadway profiles, cross-sections, and utility network design
  • Proven success in developing and managing CAD standards and workflows
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and leadership skills
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • A passion for learning and staying connected to industry innovation
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering construction plans and technical presentation

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and annual bonus/profit sharing program
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-paid life, AD&D, and long-term disability coverage
  • Paid holidays, generous vacation and sick leave
  • Retirement plan with company match
