Job description

The Department of Physics is a medium-sized department in the College of Arts and Sciences, the oldest and largest academic division of Indiana University.

Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides technical leadership for local detector assembly project for large-scale high-energy physics experiment.
  • Performs systems and mechanical engineering analyses of assembly workflow and equipment, interfacing with scientific and technical staff at IU and collaborating institutions.
  • Commissions assembly and testing facility.
  • Manages and contributes to detector assembly tasks and quality control operations.
  • Builds and lead team of technical staff and others.
  • Interfaces with project management.
  • Manages design, construction and execution of shipping of completed detector modules to remote experiment site.
  • Prepares documentation for project review and archival purposes.
General Responsibilities
  • Consults with physicist/research to gain a conceptual idea for scientific equipment and produces suitable detailed mechanical designs for the equipment using computer aided-design (CAD) software.
  • Produces design specifications, 3D solid models, fabrication drawings, and procedures necessary to fabricate, test, and commission designs.
  • Prepares cost and schedule estimates for planning and budgeting purposes. Assists in the development of contract specifications, quality control procedures, and bid analysis.
  • Manages fabrication of components using internal department machine shop resources or external vendors.
  • Coordinates testing and assembly of manufactured components.
  • Assists in the hiring and training of technicians or temporary employees and documentation of assembly procedures.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 4 years in relevant field.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
  • Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
SKILLS
Required
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to clearly express instructions and procedures in written form.
  • Basic machining, metalworking, and woodworking skills.
  • Experience in design, engineering and construction of mechanical systems and assemblies used for scientific research preferred.
  • Ability to utilize computer aided design (CAD), word processing, and spreadsheet software.
  • Familiarity with computer-controlled machine equipment, mills, lathes, welding techniques, hand tools, crane, and forklift operations.
Working Conditions / Demands
The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
