What is a computer aided design programmer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Programmer is a professional who creates, modifies, and optimizes software programs used for designing products, buildings, or mechanical parts using CAD systems. They write code to automate repetitive design tasks, enhance CAD software capabilities, and integrate CAD tools with other engineering applications. CAD Programmers often work closely with engineers, designers, and architects to ensure the software meets project requirements and industry standards. Their expertise helps streamline the design process and improve productivity in various engineering and architectural fields.

How do computer aided design programmers typically collaborate with engineers and designers during a project?

Computer Aided Design Programmers work closely with engineers and designers throughout the development process to translate design concepts into precise digital models. They often participate in team meetings to clarify requirements, suggest optimizations, and ensure the CAD software scripts or tools meet project needs. Effective communication is essential, as CAD Programmers frequently incorporate feedback, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide training or support to team members using their custom tools. This collaborative approach helps streamline workflow and ensures the final product aligns with engineering specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Programmer, you need strong proficiency in CAD software, programming languages (such as AutoLISP or Python), and a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, usually supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and scripting environments is essential, along with experience in automating design processes. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you create accurate, efficient, and user-friendly CAD solutions. These combined skills ensure the development of precise, automated designs that improve productivity and meet the technical requirements of complex projects.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Programmer vs CAD Technician?

AspectComputer Aided Design ProgrammerCAD Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in CAD, engineering, or related fieldOften has a diploma or certification in CAD or drafting
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly in software development, programming, and customization of CAD toolsFocuses on creating technical drawings and drafting for projects
Industry UsageUsed in engineering, manufacturing, and software development sectorsCommon in architecture, construction, and engineering firms

While both roles involve CAD software, Computer Aided Design Programmers focus on developing and customizing CAD applications through programming, whereas CAD Technicians primarily create detailed technical drawings and drafts. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities for each role.

Is Computer Aided Design Programmer still a good career?

Computer Aided Design (CAD) programming remains a viable career as it is essential in industries like engineering, architecture, and manufacturing. Professionals in this field should have strong technical skills, proficiency with CAD software, and often benefit from certifications to stay competitive. Demand for CAD programmers continues due to ongoing technological advancements and industry reliance on digital design tools.

What does a computer aided design programmer do?

A computer aided design programmer develops and modifies CAD software programs used to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for engineering, architecture, or manufacturing projects. They often work with CAD tools like AutoCAD or SolidWorks and may need programming skills in languages such as Python or C++ to customize or automate design processes.

Job description

About Re:Build

At Re:Build, our mission is to ensure the next generation of important products are made, at scale, in America. We are laying the foundation for a better future for our customers, employees, and communities by revitalizing America's manufacturing base and creating meaningful jobs across the country, including in historically deindustrialized regions.

We operate an advanced, end-to-end manufacturing platform that partners with industrial companies and innovators to take products from first concept to full-scale production in critical verticals including aerospace and defense, electrification, medical, energy and environment, and robotics and automation.

The way we operate is as important as the work we do. It's guided by The Re:Build Way, 16 principles that shape how we collaborate with each other, partner with our customers and vendors, and contribute to the communities where we operate. (link to The Re:Build Way principles)

Who we are looking for

Using emotional intelligence, compassion, and a strong voice‑of‑the‑customer approach, this role is responsible for crafting, setting up, building, maintaining, and supporting Re:Build’s enterprise engineering systems like CAD, PDM, and PLM ecosystemsβ€”including SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA, Teamcenter, and supporting engineering applications such as MATLAB. The CAD Systems Engineer ensures that our engineering and production teams have reliable, performant, secure, and well‑integrated tools that enable high‑quality design, collaboration, and product development aligned with business goals.

This senior‑level role collaborates closely with engineering, cybersecurity, and manufacturing teams to deliver stable and scalable engineering systems. Responsibilities also include mentoring team members, producing and maintaining accurate documentation, delivering work within defined SLAs, defining detailed work plans, and leading automation and continuous‑improvement initiatives that enhance engineering productivity and system reliability across all Re:Build sites.

The ideal candidate brings a blend of CAD/PLM technical depth, systems engineering expertise, and the ability to support a fast-paced, multi-site engineering environment. This role is expected to use AI to streamline all aspects of Engineering systems administration and capabilities.

What you get to do

  • Understand and analyze all organization requirements, i.e. performance, scalability, availability, and security requirements
  • Design, configure, optimize all CAD systems/solutions, including all on-premise (manufacturing, office, remote, etc.) and cloud (Azure, AWS, SaaS, etc.) to meet organizational goals and needs
  • Lead and maintain CAD systems/solutions (servers, storage, security, end point management, virtualization, application management, licensing, etc.)
  • Provide fixing and support to accurately resolve CAD system issues to keep our business successfully running, while keeping customers informed with regular status updates as needed
  • Monitor CAD system performance and proactively solve issues using infrastructure system monitoring and inspection tools
  • Perform regular system updates and patching
  • Provide reporting and clear explanation of CAD system utilization and licensing on a regular basis
  • Collaborate with other IT engineers and security team to ensure systems are available, interoperable, performant, and meet cybersecurity and compliance requirements
  • Collaborate, mentor, and work with team members where cross team needs exist
  • Finish the accurate documentation, i.e. build, configurations, ticketing, work updates, status reports, runbooks, knowledge base articles, etc.
  • Provide timely and accurate updates of work status
  • Define and document work plans and time/date estimates to complete work
  • Deliver all work within service level agreements, commitments, and quality standards
  • Automate work via scripting and other methods
