What is a computer aided design programmer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Programmer is a professional who creates, modifies, and optimizes software programs used for designing products, buildings, or mechanical parts using CAD systems. They write code to automate repetitive design tasks, enhance CAD software capabilities, and integrate CAD tools with other engineering applications. CAD Programmers often work closely with engineers, designers, and architects to ensure the software meets project requirements and industry standards. Their expertise helps streamline the design process and improve productivity in various engineering and architectural fields.

How do computer aided design programmers typically collaborate with engineers and designers during a project?

Computer Aided Design Programmers work closely with engineers and designers throughout the development process to translate design concepts into precise digital models. They often participate in team meetings to clarify requirements, suggest optimizations, and ensure the CAD software scripts or tools meet project needs. Effective communication is essential, as CAD Programmers frequently incorporate feedback, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide training or support to team members using their custom tools. This collaborative approach helps streamline workflow and ensures the final product aligns with engineering specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Programmer, you need strong proficiency in CAD software, programming languages (such as AutoLISP or Python), and a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, usually supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and scripting environments is essential, along with experience in automating design processes. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you create accurate, efficient, and user-friendly CAD solutions. These combined skills ensure the development of precise, automated designs that improve productivity and meet the technical requirements of complex projects.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Programmer vs CAD Technician?

AspectComputer Aided Design ProgrammerCAD Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in CAD, engineering, or related fieldOften has a diploma or certification in CAD or drafting
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly in software development, programming, and customization of CAD toolsFocuses on creating technical drawings and drafting for projects
Industry UsageUsed in engineering, manufacturing, and software development sectorsCommon in architecture, construction, and engineering firms

While both roles involve CAD software, Computer Aided Design Programmers focus on developing and customizing CAD applications through programming, whereas CAD Technicians primarily create detailed technical drawings and drafts. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities for each role.

Is Computer Aided Design Programmer still a good career?

Computer Aided Design (CAD) programming remains a viable career as it is essential in industries like engineering, architecture, and manufacturing. Professionals in this field should have strong technical skills, proficiency with CAD software, and often benefit from certifications to stay competitive. Demand for CAD programmers continues due to ongoing technological advancements and industry reliance on digital design tools.

What does a computer aided design programmer do?

A computer aided design programmer develops and modifies CAD software programs used to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for engineering, architecture, or manufacturing projects. They often work with CAD tools like AutoCAD or SolidWorks and may need programming skills in languages such as Python or C++ to customize or automate design processes.

Job description

Staff Engineer – Facilities BIM/CAD / VDC

Location: Peoria, AZ (100% Onsite)

Industry: Advanced Manufacturing / Semiconductor Infrastructure

Compensation: $120,000 – $150,000 Base Salary + Comprehensive Benefits

Experience Level: Staff Level (3+ Years Experience)

Shape the Digital Twin of a Next-Generation Manufacturing Facility

Are you an expert in Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), BIM, and 3D model federation for complex industrial infrastructure?

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Facilities BIM/CAD Engineer to serve as the owner’s representative for all digital asset management, CAD deliverables, and VDC coordination at our greenfield advanced manufacturing facility in Peoria, Arizona. In this cross-functional role, you will bridge the gap between design consultants, trade contractors, equipment suppliers, and facility engineering teams—ensuring that our physical build aligns seamlessly with our digital model throughout construction, commissioning, and long-term operations.

Position Summary & Core Scope

As the Staff Facilities BIM/CAD Engineer, you will build and maintain the master BIM/CAD database from initial consultant drawings through full facility handover. You will oversee multidisciplinary clash detection, establish drawing standards, coordinate tool hook-up layouts, and manage the digital repository for all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, process, gas/chemical, and life safety infrastructure.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • BIM Database & Standards Management: Establish, maintain, and expand the master BIM/CAD database and digital asset repository from consultant design documents. Ensure strict adherence to BIM execution plans, Level of Development (LOD) standards, and document control procedures.

  • 3D Coordination & Clash Detection: Perform multidisciplinary model federation and clash detection using Navisworks and BIM tools to identify and resolve spatial conflicts across MEP, process utility routing, and structural systems before field installation.

  • Tool Hook-up & Infrastructure Integration: Collaborate closely with tool installation designers to manage tool layouts, utility connection points, and space planning within cleanroom environments.

  • Owner Representation & Construction Support: Review design submittals, assess constructability, monitor jobsite installation progress against approved 3D models, and support commissioning through model verification.

  • Sustaining Operations & As-Built Records: Manage updates to as-built drawings and digital models following construction modifications. Provide operational teams with accurate, real-time spatial and utility routing data for ongoing facility maintenance and office space planning.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Partnership: Partner continuously with internal mechanical, electrical, process, controls, UPW, wastewater, gas/chemical, and fire protection engineering teams.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or an Associate’s degree in CAD/Drafting Technology.

  • Experience: 3+ years of hands-on experience in Revit BIM, VDC, AutoCAD design coordination, or construction engineering.

  • Sector Focus: Direct experience working on high-tech manufacturing facilities (e.g., semiconductor, microelectronics, pharmaceutical, data centers, or heavy industrial infrastructure) is strongly preferred.

  • Software Proficiency: Deep proficiency with Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).

  • Technical Knowledge:

    • Proven experience with model federation, clash detection, and multidisciplinary coordination.

    • Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and 3D schematics across MEP and specialized process utilities.

    • Solid grasp of BIM Execution Plans (BEP), LOD 100+ requirements, and data control management.

  • Location: Must be based in or willing to relocate to the Peoria / Greater Phoenix, AZ area for 100% on-site support.

What We Offer
  • Competitive Base Salary: $120,000 – $150,000 (commensurate with experience).

  • Key Role in a Greenfield Build: Lead the VDC strategy for a major, state-of-the-art industrial facility.

  • Comprehensive Benefits Package: Premium medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) matching, generous PTO, and professional development support.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume detailing your VDC/BIM project experience along with examples or a portfolio of complex industrial/MEP coordination projects you have managed.
