What is a computer aided design programmer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Programmer is a professional who creates, modifies, and optimizes software programs used for designing products, buildings, or mechanical parts using CAD systems. They write code to automate repetitive design tasks, enhance CAD software capabilities, and integrate CAD tools with other engineering applications. CAD Programmers often work closely with engineers, designers, and architects to ensure the software meets project requirements and industry standards. Their expertise helps streamline the design process and improve productivity in various engineering and architectural fields.

How do computer aided design programmers typically collaborate with engineers and designers during a project?

Computer Aided Design Programmers work closely with engineers and designers throughout the development process to translate design concepts into precise digital models. They often participate in team meetings to clarify requirements, suggest optimizations, and ensure the CAD software scripts or tools meet project needs. Effective communication is essential, as CAD Programmers frequently incorporate feedback, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide training or support to team members using their custom tools. This collaborative approach helps streamline workflow and ensures the final product aligns with engineering specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Programmer, you need strong proficiency in CAD software, programming languages (such as AutoLISP or Python), and a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, usually supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and scripting environments is essential, along with experience in automating design processes. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you create accurate, efficient, and user-friendly CAD solutions. These combined skills ensure the development of precise, automated designs that improve productivity and meet the technical requirements of complex projects.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Programmer vs CAD Technician?

AspectComputer Aided Design ProgrammerCAD Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in CAD, engineering, or related fieldOften has a diploma or certification in CAD or drafting
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly in software development, programming, and customization of CAD toolsFocuses on creating technical drawings and drafting for projects
Industry UsageUsed in engineering, manufacturing, and software development sectorsCommon in architecture, construction, and engineering firms

While both roles involve CAD software, Computer Aided Design Programmers focus on developing and customizing CAD applications through programming, whereas CAD Technicians primarily create detailed technical drawings and drafts. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities for each role.

Is Computer Aided Design Programmer still a good career?

Computer Aided Design (CAD) programming remains a viable career as it is essential in industries like engineering, architecture, and manufacturing. Professionals in this field should have strong technical skills, proficiency with CAD software, and often benefit from certifications to stay competitive. Demand for CAD programmers continues due to ongoing technological advancements and industry reliance on digital design tools.

What does a computer aided design programmer do?

A computer aided design programmer develops and modifies CAD software programs used to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for engineering, architecture, or manufacturing projects. They often work with CAD tools like AutoCAD or SolidWorks and may need programming skills in languages such as Python or C++ to customize or automate design processes.

Job description

About the Role:

In this role, you will own and evolve our Siemens NX CAD ecosystem, serving as the technical lead for CAD administration, standards development, workflow automation, Check‑Mate implementation, and NX customization. You will develop scalable CAD processes and tools that improve engineering productivity and ensure consistent design practices across the organization.

In addition to owning the CAD environment, you will work closely with our responsible engineers to create and manage large, complex assemblies, develop and maintain reusable hardware libraries, and produce high‑quality engineering drawings for our nuclear microreactor. The ideal candidate is an expert NX user with extensive experience implementing and customizing enterprise CAD environments, thrives on building robust engineering processes, and communicates proactively across multidisciplinary teams.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Own the administration, configuration, and continuous improvement of the Siemens NX CAD environment.
  • Develop and maintain NX standards, templates, Check‑Mate rules, automation, and other tools that improve engineering quality and productivity.
  • Evolve and enforce CAD modeling, drafting, and data management best practices across the engineering organization.
  • Create, maintain, and manage large, complex NX assemblies that are accurate, robust, and scalable.
  • Review, troubleshoot, and improve CAD models and engineering drawings to ensure compliance with modeling standards, drafting standards, and best practices.
  • Partner with Responsible Engineers (REs) to develop mechanical parts, complex assemblies, and high‑quality engineering drawings.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience administering and designing in Siemens NX within a complex mechanical engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining CAD standards, templates, reusable libraries, Check‑Mate rules, and NX automation or customization (e.g., NX Open, journals, or similar tools).
  • Proficient in creating manufacturing‑ready engineering drawings with expert application of ASME Y14.5 GD&T principles.
  • Experience administering or supporting Product Data Management (PDM) systems, including management of CAD data, part structures, revisions, metadata, and engineering change workflows.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or STEM discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience using Siemens NX in a complex product development environment.
  • Experience administering enterprise CAD systems, developing CAD standards, and implementing CAD workflows and automation.
  • Experience working with Product Data Management (PDM) systems and engineering release processes.
  • Experience developing engineering automation or custom tools using Python, NX Open, MATLAB, or similar scripting languages.
  • Experience in the nuclear, aerospace, robotics, or other highly regulated, high‑performance industries.
  • Experience supporting hardware development in a fast‑paced product development environment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand complex assemblies, identify design issues, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones.
  • Ability to travel to customer and mission‑relevant locations as needed.
