Job description

Position Overview

Power your future with Qualus in our Engineering department as a Drafting Technician. Drafters at Qualus partner with engineering teams to support Substation Engineering and Protection & Control design projects. They create and modify drawings using CAD software including MicroStation and AutoCAD, while adhering to established CAD standards. With a foundational understanding of drafting principles, they develop substation physical drawings (electrical plans, elevation, conduit, and foundation drawings) and P&C drawings (AC and DC schematics, circuit schedules, single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams), and more. Our drafters also organize project drawing files, perform quality checks, and provide basic technical support for CAD-related tasks. They are also responsible for drawing submittals to clients.

Responsibilities
  • Provide production CAD support by developing, implementing, and enforcing CAD standards while supplying technical support for CAD related software.
  • Prepare complete, and accurate documents, design and working drawings (including details) from specifications or sketches as prepared by the engineers by performing the following duties:
    • Following drawing production standards.
    • Preparing construction drawings, submission packages, and as-bults.
    • Preparing quality checks on drawings and layouts.
    • Cleaning CAD files for project closeout.
    • Set up project drawing files.
  • Develop substation physical drawing including electrical plans, elevation, conduit, and foundation drawings using CAD software.
  • Develop protection & control drawings including single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, circuit schedules, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, sections and details using CAD software.
  • Maintain CAD document archive and retrieval for projects and the integrity of the drawing and its system.
  • Act as a liaison for operations, project teams, engineering design house and vendors.
  • Assist the engineer with coordination and shop drawing review during the final administration of projects.ย 
  • Organize CAD drawings and files.ย 
  • Create and generate design reports to include creating rendering, material takeoffs, central files and work sets, and schedules and legend types.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 0-3 years of experience in electrical drafting or related fields.
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD, familiarity with MicroStation is a plus but not required
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality of deliverables.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Exposure to electrical distribution, utilities, or infrastructure projects is preferred.
  • Experience interpreting technical specifications and drawings is preferred.
  • Familiarity with industry standards or design best practices is preferred.
