Computer Aided Design Manager information

What does a computer aided design manager do?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Manager oversees the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of CAD systems within an organization. They are responsible for managing CAD software, developing standards and best practices, training staff, and ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of design processes. CAD Managers also collaborate with engineering and design teams to streamline workflow, resolve technical issues, and facilitate project delivery. Their role is essential for leveraging technology to enhance productivity and maintain quality in design projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design manager?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design Manager, you need deep expertise in CAD software, a background in engineering or design, and experience leading design teams. Mastery of tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and project management systems, along with relevant certifications such as Autodesk Certified Professional, is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage teams and coordinate effectively across departments. These competencies ensure efficient project delivery, high-quality design standards, and successful team performance in a competitive technical environment.

What are some common challenges faced by computer aided design managers when leading design teams?

Computer Aided Design Managers often navigate challenges such as balancing project deadlines with the need for high-quality design output and ensuring effective collaboration between designers, engineers, and other stakeholders. They must stay updated on evolving CAD software and best practices, while also mentoring team members with varying skill levels. Additionally, managing remote or cross-functional teams and integrating new technologies into existing workflows can require strong communication and change-management skills.

Job description

CAD Manager

Santa Fe Springs, CA · Hybrid or On-Site · Full-Time

We're working with a national EPC electrical and energy contractor to fill a CAD Manager role on their team. They split work across two project types: commercial and industrial solar, where the team runs projects from conceptual layouts through full permit drawing sets, and utility-scale solar, where their scope covers preliminary design. It's a hands-on leadership role, managing a team of CAD designers, hybrid or on-site.

What you'll do

  • Manage and mentor a team of CAD designers, setting priorities and reviewing output for quality and consistency
  • Oversee CAD production for C&I solar projects from concept through permit-ready drawing sets
  • Oversee preliminary CAD design for utility-scale solar projects
  • Set and enforce drawing standards, templates, and QA/QC processes across the team
  • Coordinate with engineering, project management, and field teams to keep designs on schedule
  • Review redlines and manage revision cycles across active projects
  • Support staffing and workload planning as project volume shifts between C&I and utility work

What you'll need

  • Strong AutoCAD skills (AutoCAD Electrical, Civil 3D, or similar); Revit a plus
  • Experience designing electrical drawings for solar or renewable energy projects, ideally spanning both commercial/industrial and utility scale
  • Prior experience supervising or leading a design/drafting team
  • Working knowledge of NEC and permitting requirements for electrical construction drawings
  • Comfortable working with a team that is currently fully in-office; some travel may be required

Nice to have

  • Experience with both greenfield utility solar and rooftop or ground-mount C&I solar
  • Familiarity with permitting processes across multiple AHJs
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (not required with strong hands-on experience)

We'd rather talk to someone strong who's slightly light on one of these than miss out on good people, so if most of this fits, reach out.
