Job purpose
The Certified Medical Dosimetristis a member of the radiation oncology team whoknowsthe overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment.They are awareof procedures commonly used intreatment delivery. Theyhavethe education andexpertisenecessary to generate radiation dose distributions and calculations in collaboration with medical physicistsand radiation oncologists.
Essential Job Functions
- Design a treatment planusing a computer and/or manual computation withoptimalbeam geometry to deliver a prescribed radiation dose and spare critical structures perthe Radiation Oncologist's prescription.
- Identify and contour normal and dose-limiting structuresusing images from one or more data sets.Assumesproficiencyin image registration with various image data sets,includingCT, MRI,and PET.
- Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery to include DRRs, CBCTs,and other IGRT methods, as specified.
- Supervise, perform, orassistin simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging devices,including but not limited to CT, MRI, and PET.
- Supervise, perform, orassistinfabricatingcompensation filters, custom shields, wedges, and otherbeam-modifying devices.
- Supervise, perform, orassistin the planning and implementation of the production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
- Communicate with the radiation therapist(s) and assume an advisory role inimplementingthe treatment plan,including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment or imaging parameters.
- Perform calculationsto deliver the prescribed dose accurately, document all pertinent information in thepatientrecord, and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations by an approved method.
- Provide assistanceand technical support to the Medical Physicist in radiation safety and protection, quality assurance of treatment plans,and radiation oncology equipment.
- Operates and performs quality assurance, under the direction of the Medical Physicist, on the treatment planning computer(s).
- Supervise, perform, orassistinapplyingspecificpatient and/or beam dosimetry methodsas directed by the Medical Physicistphysician.
- Assistin brachytherapy procedures by performing treatment planning and dose calculations.
Qualifications
- Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environmentin addition to the following:
- Knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety.
- Expertisein the technical aspects of radiation oncology and medical physics to developoptimaltreatment plans.
- Knowledgeable in health careinformatics-includingthe resources, devices,and methods toacquire, store and retrieve data. Tools include computers, clinical guidelines, current medical terminology, andinformation and communication systems.
- Possessgood communicationand interpersonal skills tofacilitatethe exchange of information with patients, family members,the radiation oncology treatment team, andoutside entities.
- Possesseshigh-level critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Works independently butcollaborateswith the Radiation Oncology teams,including physicians, therapists, nursing,andmedicalphysics.
- Maintains a working knowledge of radiation safety principles and practices andcurrentnational and staterules and regulations.
- Has the ability to interpret criteria and develop treatment plans as defined by relevant treatment protocols.
Education/Experience
- CMD or equivalent certification
- Clinicalexperienceas a certified Medical Dosimetristin a major cancer centerpreferred.
Working conditions:
This position works in the radiation department of a busy oncology/hematology/radiation clinic. This position does not have direct patient contact.
Physical requirements:
This position requires that the employee be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for up to eight hours a day. Some walking and standing may be required to complete tasks.
