Job description

Job Summary:

The primary goal of this position is to lead and direct all aspects of design and design services for capital and expense jobs to improve worker safety, plant productivity, equipment reliability, capability, and throughput with focus on environmental, health, and safety (EHS), quality, risk management, cost, and schedule.

Provide effective design support to enable project executions/installations that impact operational efficiency, asset availability, and capital expenditure.

This position has potential to support all areas within the facility.


Responsibilities

  • Management and maintenance of the engineering drawing system, ensuring new and revised drawings are properly indexed
  • Oversee the design process from concept to completion, ensuring alignment with project goals
  • Provide field assistance for development and installation of engineering projects
  • Minimize project costs for design and installation through design clarifications
  • Maintain efficient and up-to-date CAD skills, recommending new software & changes when necessary, including 2D, 3D, and automatic drawing generation methods
  • Ensure efficiency in engineering drawing development by the design team
  • Lead design reviews and provide input during design phases.
  • Periodic discipline specific guidance and support for plant maintenance and operations
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in related field, required
  • 5+ years of experience in field, preferred
  • Proficient in Design and Drafting methods, symbols, and standards
  • Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) 2D required, 3D preferred
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Ability to adapt to a new industrial environment, required
  • Effective communication (both written and verbal) with the ability to adapt communication styles to different audiences, preferred
  • Ability to lead and/or take direction in a team environment
  • Effective time management with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, required
  • Must be well organized and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, required

Dimensions

  • This role will be located in Ravenswood, within the Central Engineering group and support the Production (Casting, Plate, Hot Line, & Coil) units within the facility.
  • Assist with large-scale projects with significant budgets that could range from less than $1M to greater than $50M, affecting strategic initiatives and organizational performance.
  • Requires strategic thinking and innovation; develops strategic guidelines and solutions for complex, undefined problems.
  • Aligning projects with strategic goals, managing high-risk projects, influencing stakeholders, and driving innovation.
  • Communication skills for internal personnel consisting of:
    • Department personnel including Project Managers/Engineers, Designers, Cost Manager
    • All levels of upper Management
    • All Production Management
    • All Plant Support Groups
  • Communication skills for external personnel consisting of:
    • 3rd party engineering and construction companies
    • Equipment Suppliers and Vendors
  • An office position with frequent field requirements

Job Specifics

  • In-depth understanding of various design software and tools (AutoCAD is required)
  • In-depth understanding of technical drawings, diagrams and schematics
  • Basic knowledge of discipline and industry standards including relevant NFPA, IEC, IEE, ASME, etc.
  • Basic understanding of machinery specifications and procedures
  • Basic understanding of CMMS systems (SAP is preferred)
