Job Summary:
The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will lead the mechanical design of lightweight, high-performance systems and subsystems, with a strong emphasis on advanced CAD design and assembly management. This role owns complex, high-part-count assemblies from concept through production, ensuring robust interface definition, configuration control, and clear documentation through drawings and BOMs. The engineer applies parametric, top-down CAD modeling, FEA, prototyping, and testing to deliver aerodynamically efficient, durable designs optimized for manufacturing and assembly. Working closely with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and production, this role drives design excellence, innovation, and seamless transition from development to sustained production with minimal oversight.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Utilize your experience with lightweight structural design and materials to own system and subsystem designs. You will own interfaces and integrate other team member's subsystems into your assemblies.
  • Control large part count assemblies in CAD and PLM, and ensure strong transition to documented control in BOMs and assembly drawings.
  • Optimize for aerodynamic profiles and efficiencies.
  • Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA), experiments, and rapid prototyping to design products for durability, performance, and manufacturing quality.
  • Develop and conduct tests to validate design across full operational capability envelope and environment.
  • Deliver market leading designs with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) / Design for Assembly (DFA) methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills; active collaboration with team leaders, management, and other team members is expected. The Sr. Engineer takes broad, high-level requirements and feedback to generate specific design tasks and outcomes; owns and drives meetings as applicable.
  • Take strong ownership of assigned systems, programs, customers, etc. Actively curate subsystem requirements, performance, and timeline. Requires very little direction from management in moving projects forward against agreed upon timelines.
  • Coordinate with suppliers during development and production; incidental travel may be required.
  • Coordinate with production staff to provide training, Manufacturing Test Requirements (MTRs), work instruction review, and troubleshooting of design issues.
  • Create and control design data from concept to product sustainment; support engineering change processes within Teledyne FLIR and with government customers as required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 6+ years of professional experience in mechanical design of weight and size sensitive assemblies and components.
  • Strong system design ownership with demonstrated experience managing complex assemblies and ensuring system specifications are being met.
  • Demonstrated strong record of technical innovation, research, and development of complex mechanical systems.
  • Strong CAD skills in both design and assembly management required. Robust parametric g and top-down modeling experience is a must.
  • Experience with PDM tools and understanding of configuration control practices.
  • Experience with battery, motor, and/or UAV propulsion systems preferred.
  • Expertise with Solidworks 3D modeling, drawing, and simulation software is strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading technical projects and teams preferred.
