What is a computer aided design intern?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern is a student or entry-level professional who assists engineering or architectural teams by creating, modifying, and managing technical drawings and models using CAD software. Their main responsibilities often include supporting design projects, updating existing drawings, and learning industry standards. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience with design tools and processes, helping prepare interns for full-time roles in engineering, architecture, or related fields.

What do computer aided design interns do?

As a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include creating and modifying 2D or 3D models, preparing technical drawings for engineering or architectural teams, and assisting with design revisions based on feedback. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced designers and engineers, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard CAD software. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, with opportunities to contribute to real-world projects, participate in team meetings, and learn about the project lifecycle from concept through production.

Working closely with Product, Manufacturing, and Engineering, this role bridges design intent and shop floor execution by producing accurate, production-ready 3D models and drawing packages for both new and existing products. You will help design the equipment used by the best Pilates studios around the world, for the premier company operating in the Pilates space.

The ideal candidate is highly proficient in parametric CAD, comfortable in a manufacturing environment, and capable of contributing to early-stage product design as well as the rigorous documentation that supports production. Experience working with wood, metal, and upholstered products is a strong advantage.

Key Responsibilities:

Product Design Support (Primary Focus)

  • Develop 3D models for new products from concept through production release.
  • Build and manage parametric assemblies in Autodesk Fusion 360 with attention to tolerances, materials, and manufacturability.
  • Produce prototypes in coordination with the shop and iterate on designs based on manufacturing feedback.
  • Generate product renderings and customer-facing dimensional visuals for new products.

Product Improvement & Design for Manufacturing

  • Deliver production-ready CAD packages that reduce manufacturing ambiguity and accelerate product launches.
  • Improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and product consistency through thoughtful design revisions.
  • Examples:
  • Carriage redesigns to improve upholstery serviceability.
  • Shoulder block tolerance improvements.
  • Self-registering frame components.
  • Redesigned maple frame joints.

Technical Documentation

  • Ensure every product has complete, accurate, revision-controlled documentation.
  • Complete material callouts, dimensional annotations, and tolerances while ensuring drawing accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Develop assembly-level drawing packages to support production training and work instructions.
  • Create documentation for product lines that are not yet fully documented, including:
  • Guillotine
  • Studio Wall Unit
  • Mats
  • Pedi Pole
  • Small apparatus and accessories (e.g., Foot Corrector, Neck Stretcher)

Internal Tooling & Process Support

  • Design shop tools, fixtures, and production aids, including:
  • Leather strap jigs
  • QA check gauges
  • Production tooling
  • Support facility layout and equipment planning through CAD for both the Ann Street and Preston Street manufacturing operations.

Customer-Facing & Marketing Support

  • Develop and maintain customer-facing dimensional documents.
  • Create textured product renderings.
  • Assist with CAD and design work for branded displays and environmental graphics.

Product Maintenance Program

  • Create and maintain visual documentation supporting equipment maintenance, including:
  • Exploded part diagrams
  • Assembly pictograms
  • Illustrated service reference materials

What You'll Own:

  • Fusion CAD library
  • Drawing revision control
  • Production drawing standards
  • Engineering documentation
  • Product rendering assets
  • Assembly illustrations

Qualifications:

Required

  • BS or BA degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Design Technology, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Furniture Design, Sculpture, or a related field.
  • High proficiency with Autodesk Fusion 360 or similar tools, including parametric modeling, assemblies, and drawing packages.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or design-build environment.
  • Strong ability to create and interpret technical drawings with accurate GD&T callouts.
  • Hands-on experience using measurement tools such as calipers, tape measures, and squares.
  • Strong organizational skills with experience managing CAD files and drawing revision control.

Preferred

  • Experience with Rhino, KeyShot, or similar rendering software.
  • Familiarity with wood, metal, and upholstered product construction.
  • Exposure to quality assurance processes, production workflows, or manufacturing environments.
