About the Role
We're looking for a CAD Technician that will assist the Surveying Team across multiple regional projects with a focus on civil infrastructure. The role leverages Trimble and Autodesk products to execute precise calculations for survey requests, field layout, takeoffs, and 3D machine control modeling. In addition to these responsibilities, the CAD Technician is also responsible for providing IFC models to support field layout activities. The CAD Technician maintains accurate records of utility locations, potholes, and as-built data, while verifying designer CAD files against plan PDFs to ensure consistency, quality, and constructability. This role requires technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate daily with survey teams and field operations teams.
Core Responsibilities
  • CAD Drafting, Modeling, and Survey Support
    • Perform CAD drafting, modeling, and survey calculations using AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center.
    • Prepare field layout files including linework, control points, staking data, and machine control deliverables.
    • Create and manage 3D models such as surfaces, corridors, and structures for survey control and machine guidance systems.
    • Generate accurate quantities and takeoffs across disciplines to support estimating and planning efforts.

  • Data Management and Quality Control
    • Maintain and update files related to utilities, pothole locations, and as-built documentation.
    • Review and cross-check designer CAD files against plan PDFs to confirm alignment, completeness, and data accuracy.
    • Ensure all CAD and survey deliverables meet RNGD standards for accuracy, constructability, and field usability.

  • Field and Equipment Support
    • Provide remote and in-person support for field survey equipment including data collectors and machine control systems.
    • Apply field survey knowledge to troubleshoot layout issues and resolve design conflicts.
    • Assist survey crews, engineers, and estimators with CAD workflows and survey hardware/software utilization.

  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering documents to support project execution.
    • Communicate clearly and professionally with estimators, project managers, survey teams, and operations staff on a daily basis.
    • Collaborate across departments to optimize survey deliverables and improve workflow efficiency.

    • Uphold high standards of safety, quality, and productivity in all tasks and interactions.
    • Follow RNGD safety policies and promote safe work practices across all technical and field-support activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of experience in Construction Survey, Dimensional Control, Industrial Measurement, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, with experience in Trimble Business Center and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong understanding of field survey procedures, methods, and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans to produce field layouts, estimates, and 3D models.
  • Proficiency with fundamental math including area, volume, geometry, proportions, and percentages.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including providing remote technical support.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor others in CAD and survey operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Procore, and B2W.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across multiple departments.
