Design Drafter
Reports To: Director of Engineering
Location: Cresco, IA
Job Summary:
Design Drafter to support the development of trailer systems and components. This role focuses on creating accurate 2D drawings and 3D models based on engineering concepts, ensuring designs are clear, manufacturable, and compliant with industry standards. The ideal candidate has strong CAD skills, a solid understanding of drafting principles, and experience working with welded structures.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Create and revise detailed 2D drawings and 3D CAD models of trailer components and assemblies (frames, crossmembers, axles, suspensions, etc.)
  • Produce fabrication drawings including weld symbols, dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications
  • Generate and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and part lists
  • Interpret engineering sketches, calculations, and design inputs into accurate technical drawings
  • Collaborate with design engineers and manufacturing teams to refine drawings for production efficiency
  • Update drawings and documentation through engineering change orders (ECOs)
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations (DOT, FMVSS, company standards)
  • Support prototype builds by providing drawing updates and resolving documentation issues
  • Maintain organized drawing files and adhere to PDM/PLM systems

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience Requirements:
  • Associate's degree or technical certification in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related field
  • 3-5 years of drafting experience, preferably in trailer, automotive, or heavy equipment industries
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical drafting standards and practices
  • Experience with welded structures and fabrication drawings
  • Basic understanding of materials such as steel and aluminum
  • Experience in trailer manufacturing or transportation equipment design

  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems for document control
