Computer Aided Design Engineer Designer information

What is a computer aided design engineer designer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Engineer Designer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and plans for products, machinery, buildings, or other engineering projects. They translate concepts and specifications into digital models, which are used by engineers, architects, and manufacturers to develop and produce various items. CAD Engineer Designers play a crucial role in streamlining the design process, improving accuracy, and facilitating collaboration across teams. Their work helps ensure that projects meet technical, safety, and functional requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design engineer designer?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design Engineer Designer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, technical drawing, and proficiency in CAD software, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree or certification. Expertise in tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with knowledge of industry-specific standards, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding CAD engineers apart when collaborating with teams and interpreting complex design requirements. These skills ensure the accurate creation of technical drawings and models, leading to successful project outcomes and seamless production processes.

How does a computer aided design engineer designer typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

As a CAD Engineer Designer, collaboration with cross-functional teams is a key part of the job. You’ll regularly interact with engineers, product managers, and manufacturing teams to ensure that designs meet technical requirements and are feasible for production. This often involves participating in design reviews, incorporating feedback, and using CAD software to revise models based on input from colleagues. Effective communication and teamwork skills are essential, as your work forms the foundation for downstream engineering and manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Engineer Designer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectComputer Aided Design Engineer DesignerMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or Design, CAD certificationsAssociate's degree or technical diploma, CAD training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesArchitectural or manufacturing drafting departments
Industry UsageProduct design, engineering, manufacturingConstruction, manufacturing, product development

Computer Aided Design Engineer Designers focus on creating detailed 3D models and engineering drawings, often requiring engineering knowledge and certifications. Mechanical Drafters primarily prepare technical drawings based on engineers' specifications. While both use CAD software, the Engineer Designer role involves more design development and technical analysis, whereas Drafters focus on drafting and documentation tasks.

Is there a demand for computer aided design engineer designers?

Computer Aided Design (CAD) engineer designers are in high demand across industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and architecture. Employers seek professionals skilled in CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Revit to develop detailed technical drawings and 3D models, with job growth driven by technological advancements and infrastructure development.

What does a computer aided design engineer designer earn?

A computer aided design (CAD) engineer or designer typically earns between $60,000 and $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $100,000 per year.

What is the salary of a computer aided design engineer designer?

Our technologies inspire people to develop and produce things that are currently unimaginable. Whether lasers, machine tools, EUV or electronics - TRUMPF is building technological worlds for future generations. Are you ready for new challenges?
TRUMPF's sheet metal fabrication tooling division is looking for a Tool Design Engineer to lead the development of custom punch and die solutions that enable our customers to innovate faster. You'll own the complete lifecycle-from initial customer conversations through final validation-ensuring every tool meets exacting performance standards and delivers real value to our customers.
What You'll Do
  • Design and engineer punch and die tooling for sheet metal punching and forming applications, balancing customer specifications with manufacturing feasibility
  • Develop and program EDM (electrical discharge machining) processes, including electrode design and hard milling operations
  • Collaborate with the tool design team to troubleshoot production challenges and refine designs based on real-world performance
  • Create and maintain technical documentation-drawings, specifications, and test records-that clearly communicates design intent to production and quality teams
  • Conduct product testing and validation, document findings, and communicate results to ensure tooling reliability and performance
  • Process design change notices (ECNs) and implement updates as customer needs or production learnings require
  • Provide pre-sales and post-sales technical support, consulting directly with customers to understand their requirements and troubleshoot issues
  • Issue production orders based on finalized specifications

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in sheet metal fabrication, tool and die making, or a related field
  • Proficiency with CAD software (Solidworks, HP ME10, or equivalent) and hard milling programming (TopCam, CamTek, or similar)
  • Working knowledge of EDM processes and TRUMPF punch equipment and ToPs software
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to teammates and customers-both in writing and face-to-face
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Education & Background
  • Associate degree in mechanical engineering or related technical field preferred
  • 2+ years of formal technical training or related industry experience
  • Equivalent experience in tool design, fabrication engineering, or CAD-driven manufacturing will be considered

Why This Role Matters
