Computer Aided Design Design information

Is AI replacing CAD designers?

AI is increasingly used to assist CAD designers by automating repetitive tasks and optimizing designs, but it does not fully replace the need for skilled CAD professionals. CAD designers still rely on their expertise to create complex, innovative, and customized designs, with AI serving as a tool to enhance productivity and accuracy.

What jobs can you do with computer-aided design?

Computer-aided design (CAD) skills open opportunities in fields such as architecture, mechanical engineering, product design, and civil engineering. Common roles include CAD technician, design engineer, drafters, and architectural drafter, often requiring proficiency with CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. These jobs typically involve creating detailed technical drawings and models for manufacturing, construction, or product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design vs CAD Technician?

AspectComputer Aided Design DesignerCAD Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in design, engineering, or related fieldOften requires a diploma or certification in CAD software
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesArchitectural firms, engineering offices, construction sites
Industry UsageUsed for creating detailed design concepts and prototypesUsed for drafting, preparing technical drawings, and documentation

Computer Aided Design Designers focus on creating detailed design concepts and prototypes, often requiring a degree in design or engineering. CAD Technicians primarily prepare technical drawings and documentation, usually with specialized certifications. Both roles work closely within engineering and architectural industries but serve different stages of the design process.

What can I do with a computer-aided design degree?

A computer-aided design (CAD) degree prepares individuals for careers as CAD technicians, drafters, or designers in industries like architecture, engineering, and manufacturing. Graduates can create detailed technical drawings, 3D models, and prototypes using CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks, often working in design teams or project environments. Certification and proficiency in CAD tools enhance job prospects and career advancement.

Job description

Hill International is seeking an Electrical CAD Designer in Berkeley, CA
We are seeking an experienced 3D Electrical CAD Designer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing detailed electrical designs, schematics, and bills of materials that translate engineering concepts into manufacturable products. The ideal candidate brings several years of hands-on CAD experience, strong attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset.
This is a rare opportunity to apply your technical expertise while contributing to groundbreaking projects like the ALS-U (Advanced Light Source Upgrade), which will expand scientific discovery for decades to come.
Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain electrical models, wiring diagrams, schematics, and panel layouts using industry-standard CAD software, in particular AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Inventor and KiCad.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and project managers to ensure designs meet technical requirements and integrate seamlessly with overall product assemblies.
  • Generate bills of materials (BOMs), wire/cable lists, and supporting documentation for manufacturing and assembly teams.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards, codes, and internal quality requirements.
  • Review and revise designs based on feedback, design reviews, and engineering change orders.
  • Maintain organized design files, libraries, and revision control within Windchill's documentation system.

Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in electrical CAD design (AutoCAD Electrical or KiCad) building and integrating complex models.
  • Demonstrated experience producing manufacturing-ready documentation including BOMs and wire/cable schedules in industry.
  • Understanding of PLM/PDM systems for version control and design management.
  • Strong understanding of electrical principles, components, schematics, and wiring practices.
  • Familiarity with electrical standards and codes (e.g., IPC, IEC, UL, NEC, as applicable).
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills with ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.
  • Must be local to Berkeley; Full-time on-site position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of practical experience with electrical CAD software (AutoCAD Electrical or KiCad)
  • Experience with 3D mechanical CAD integration and electromechanical design.
  • Experience working in the Windchill environment
  • Prior work in complex industrial electrical equipment or highly technical and advanced engineering designs.
  • Experience with harness design tools and routing software.

The salary range for this position is $115,000-$145,000. The offered salary will be based on the applicants qualifications, education, experience and work location.
