Job Description

The CAD Design Intern will work alongside WPI's Engineering and Design team, gaining hands-on experience in 3D modeling and technical drawing creation. This internship offers an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world construction and manufacturing environment, contributing to product design projects while developing professional skills in industry-standard CAD tools. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, detail-oriented, and ready to grow alongside a team of experienced engineers and designers.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and refine 3D models for product design and manufacturing applications.
  • Create technical drawings and documentation to support design and production workflows.
  • Collaborate with engineers and designers on active product design and manufacturing projects.
  • Learn and apply WPI standards for drawing creation, file management, and design documentation.
  • Assist with reviewing and updating existing CAD files and design packages.
  • Support the engineering team with other design-related tasks as needed.

What You'll Learn

  • Professional-level 3D modeling techniques used in construction and manufacturing.
  • Technical drawing creation and interpretation to industry standards.
  • How product design translates from concept to constructable, manufacturable deliverables.
  • Best practices for CAD file organization, version control, and documentation.
  • How to work effectively within a collaborative engineering team environment.
Requirements

Basic Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a program in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with at least one of the following CAD platforms, either through coursework or prior work experience: Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor, or SolidWorks.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ability to learn new software tools and apply new skills as they are taught.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all work produced.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage tasks and deadlines independently.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with more than one CAD platform (Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks).
  • Prior exposure to construction, prefabrication, or manufacturing environments.
  • Local to office preferred.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
