What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

Job description

Product Systems & Mechanical Design Engineer.

About Us:
3LED Group is a vertically integrated lighting and photonics company with brands including Xico Lighting, Prolume Lighting, Fusion Optix, LEDSupply, and LEDdynamics. We design, manufacture, and deliver innovative lighting solutions for architectural, commercial, and specialty applications.

We are seeking a Product Systems & Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team. This role combines mechanical product design, engineering documentation, product data management, and automation. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping how products are designed, documented, manufactured, and delivered while helping build the next generation of engineering systems and AI-driven workflows.

Job Summary:
The Product Systems & Mechanical Design Engineer will own the creation and maintenance of engineering documentation, BOMs, product structures, and CAD data across our product portfolio. This individual will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, sales, and operations teams to support existing products while helping develop scalable systems for future growth.

This is not a traditional drafting position. We are looking for someone who wants to help build the digital foundation of a modern product company through automation, configuration tools, and AI-enabled engineering processes.

Responsibilities:

Product Design & Engineering:
  • Design and develop lighting products, assemblies, and components.
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings.
  • Support new product development from concept through production.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly principles.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to improve product quality and efficiency.

Engineering Documentation:
Create and maintain:
  • Shop drawings.
  • Assembly instructions.
  • Installation guides.
  • Manufacturing documentation.
  • Product specifications.
  • Ensure documentation accuracy and revision control.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards across product families.

BOM & Product Data Management:
  • Own engineering BOM creation and maintenance.
  • Maintain product structures, part numbering systems, and revision control.
  • Ensure data integrity within PDM and ERP systems.
  • Support engineering change management processes.

Automation & Digital Engineering:
  • Develop and improve rules-based product configuration systems.
  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive engineering tasks.
  • Support integration between CAD, PDM, ERP, and customer-facing systems.
  • Participate in the implementation of AI tools and engineering automation initiatives.

Product Platform Development:
  • Support the expansion of Xico and Prolume product offerings.
  • Help create scalable product architectures that support multiple brands.
  • Contribute to improving customer experience through better product information and documentation.
  • Participate in new brand and product launch initiatives.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of mechanical design and product development experience.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of BOM management and product structures.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

Preferred:
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM or similar systems.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and assembly operations.
  • Experience with configurable products or product families.
  • Familiarity with CAD automation, scripting, or engineering software development.
  • Experience integrating engineering systems with ERP platforms.
  • Architectural lighting or LED product experience.

What Success Looks Like:
Within your first year, you will:
  • Improve consistency and quality of engineering documentation.
  • Establish strong BOM and product data governance.
  • Help reduce manual engineering effort through automation.
  • Support new product introductions and portfolio expansion.
  • Build the foundation for AI-assisted engineering workflows and scalable product configuration systems.

Benefits:
  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • 401(k) with company match.
