What is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

What is AutoCAD salary?

Job description

Here at Humanoid, we believe in a future where robots amplify human potential. That's why we've set out on a mission to build the world's most capable, commercially-scalable, and safe humanoid robots. We're bringing that mission to life with HMND‑01 Alpha - our rapidly developed humanoid platform now running in real industrial pilots - and we're growing the team to take it even further.
About The Role
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer on the Core Platform team, you'll play a key part in turning ambitious, open-ended ideas into high-performing, real-world robotics solutions. Your work will span hands-on design, collaborative prototyping, and technical validation, driving innovation in mechanisms, and structures. You'll develop detailed CAD models and documentation, ensure manufacturability and safety, and work closely with cross-disciplinary teams and vendors-all while adapting to rapidly evolving project needs. This is an opportunity for creative engineers who thrive on solving complex problems and shaping the future of robotic design.
What You'll Do
  • Interpret Open-Ended Design Requirements: Help transform broad project requirements into detailed, pragmatic design specifications for new systems and components.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work with engineers from various disciplines to brainstorm, design, and develop prototype robots that meet challenging performance targets.
  • Innovate with Mechanisms and Structures: Design and refine innovative mechanisms, interfaces, and structures that elevate robot performance, from energy-absorbing crash protection to ergonomic robot coverings.
  • CAD Design & Documentation: Create and manage CAD models, engineering drawings, assembly documentation, and test plans for parts and assemblies.
  • Analysis and Validation: Perform necessary analyses on new designs, validate them through bench tests, and ensure that they meet all performance, safety, and manufacturability standards.
  • Troubleshoot and Implement Solutions: Identify and resolve design issues by determining root causes and implementing effective corrective and preventative measures.
  • Vendor Management: Collaborate with external vendors for components and assemblies that require outsourcing, ensuring that third-party designs meet Humanoid's stringent requirements.
  • Adapt to Changing Needs: Stay flexible and responsive to changing project requirements while maintaining a team-first, collaborative mindset.

What We're Looking For
  • BSME with 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience designing high‑performance mechanical structures, motion mechanisms, and integrated systems, ideally in robotics or comparable high‑precision fields.
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD software (NX, SolidWorks, Creo etc.) with experience in FEA and topology optimization. We use Solidworks.
  • Strong understanding of ASME drafting standards, including GD&T (Y14.5-2018).
  • Experience transitioning designs from early concepts (NPI, EVT, DVT) to production.
  • Familiarity with production processes such as casting, sheet metal, stamping, hydroforming, composites, and compliant energy-absorbing structures.
  • Experience designing lightweight, high-performance structures, compliant mechanisms, and flexible energy-absorbing designs.
  • Creative and collaborative thinking with a team-first mentality.
What We Offer
  • Comprehensive health coverage for US‑based employees, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, with virtual care and employee assistance resources.
  • Meaningful time off to rest and recharge: 23 days of PTO (accrued), separate sick leave, and paid company holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Equity included-we believe builders should share in what they build.
  • Free daily catered lunch, snacks, and drinks in‑office.
  • Collaboration with top‑tier engineers, researchers, and product experts in AI and robotics.
  • Freedom to influence the product and own key initiatives.

For this role in Massachusetts, the expected base salary range is $160K-$215K USD per year; your placement in that range depends on how your experience maps to our internal leveling.
