Computer Aided Design Design Engineer information

What is a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

Job description

The CAD Engineering Designer will utilize AutoCAD 2025 to provide preliminary design and drafting support for Factory Engineering, focusing on architectural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines. This role includes assisting in the preparation of supporting documents for capital investment proposals in collaboration with factory and Group Engineering teams. The CAD Drafter will need to be proficient in AutoCAD 2D, 3D, and Autodesk Inventor, enabling the creation of industrial drawings for equipment tooling, layouts, process flow sheets, P&IDs, and fabrication details. Additionally, the CAD Drafter will prepare specifications to meet comprehensive design responsibilities and may work with BIM360 and AutoCAD Construction Cloud (ACC). The ability to assemble bid packages following AIA specifications and execute small projects is essential. Willingness to travel to other factory and vendor locations is required, with travel expectations of 10‑20%.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure that factory key drawings are kept up‑to‑date and properly archived at the factory or site.
  • Support the factory engineers and operations teams in establishing layouts and flow sheets during the conceptual and basic design phases of projects related to new products, new process lines, and line improvement projects.
  • Support various large print requests for factory events, VIP visits, etc.
  • Propose and define different alternatives to support the Early Management principles.
  • Support engineers or other factory functions with technical concepts and basic design for operational projects, including machine or tooling design using AutoDesk Inventor to support Early Management principles.
  • Update and coordinate technical guidelines and specifications related to drawings.
  • Maintain and ensure standards for engineering drawings are consistently applied in the factory in accordance with Group Engineering drawing standards.
  • Own the organization of Engineering Drawing and manuals in both paper and electronic format. Support project turnover from Engineers to ensure manuals and drawings are properly archived for Engineering and Maintenance activities. Digitize drawings as necessary.
  • Provide training to factory engineers or any third‑party contractors engaged in the preparation of factory project or operational drawings.
  • Manage small building improvement/upgrade projects with contractor supervision.
  • Support the Engineering Department with SAP and NIMT Administration.
  • Must be willing to travel to other Nestlé factories and vendor sites as required to support resident factory project requirements.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required; college degree in a related field preferred.
  • Professional certification in industrial design/drafting, specifically using AutoCAD, preferred.
  • Technically competent and highly proficient in AutoCAD 2D/3D to help support Early Management principles.
  • 4‑6 years of experience in industrial design, preferred.
  • Work experience in a TPM environment is preferred.
  • AutoDesk Inventor or AutoCAD factory design suite experience is a plus.
SKILLS
  • Familiarity with applicable hygiene details for food plant design.
  • Ability to prepare architectural, mechanical, and electrical designs, in terms of layout, code requirements and specifications.
  • Familiarity with multiple engineering discipline coordination, planning and execution.
  • Strong drafting and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment as well as cross‑functionally across divisions.
  • Work within multiple teams.
  • Familiarity with SAP is a plus.
  • Good conceptual and technical problem‑solving skills.
