Computer Aided Design Design Engineer information

What is a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

Guided by our leadership vision of valuing people, embracing agility, and fostering growth, we cultivate an innovative culture that empowers you to achieve your full potential. Unleash your talent and redefine what's possible. Job Description: Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Systems Engineer to join our team! In this role you will get to use your CAD design and knowledge management expertise to produce and control high-quality engineering drawings and site documentation for a complex, geographically distributed mission program. What You'll Be Doing: * Develop and maintain CAD-based engineering drawings and layouts, including equipment rooms, rack elevations, cabling, power distribution, and required network diagrams.
* Prepare deployment-ready drawing packages with appropriate title blocks, revision history, and adherence to program drafting standards.
* Convert site surveys and field notes into accurate "as-built" drawings, incorporating photos, measurements, and field engineering feedback.
* Build and maintain structured knowledge repositories for drawings, build packages, installation guides, and troubleshooting references.
* Define and apply metadata and tagging standards so engineering documents are searchable, traceable, and linked to configuration baselines and changes.
* Support systems engineering activities for physical deployments (space, power, cooling, cabling) and participate in technical and deployment readiness reviews.
* Maintain CAD templates and documentation quality checklists to ensure consistent standards, revision control, and audit-ready document traceability across deployments. What Required Skills You'll Bring: * Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field; 4 additional years of experience in lieu of a degree
* 7+ years of relevant experience
* Experience in systems engineering, deployment engineering, or documentation engineering with significant CAD responsibilities.
* Proficiency with at least one CAD tool (e.g., AutoCAD, DraftSight, Revit, SolidWorks).
* Demonstrated experience producing equipment room layouts, rack elevations, cabling/power schematics, and site "as-built" documentation.
* Strong knowledge management and documentation control skills, including building and maintaining structured repositories and document workflows across multi-disciplinary teams.
* Strong written communication and attention to detail.
* An active TS/SCI clearance. What Desired Skills You'll Bring All Levels: * Experience with data center/telecom room documentation: MDF/IDF layouts, patch panels, fiber/copper standards.
* Familiarity with configuration management practices and controlled document libraries (revisioning, baselines, audits).
* Experience using documentation platforms (e.g., Confluence/SharePoint) and integrating diagrams/drawings with knowledge bases.
* Familiarity with labeling standards (TIA/EIA) and structured cabling best practices.
* Experience supporting distributed site deployments and working from site surveys and field engineering feedback. Security Clearance Requirement: An active Top Secret SCI security clearance is required for this position. This position is part of our Federal Solutions team.
