Computer Aided Design Design Engineer information

What is a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

Job description

Description

The Opportunity

RETTEW is seeking a Survey CAD Designer to join our Survey & GIS Team. This role is a great fit for a CAD professional with strong AutoCAD Civil 3D skills who wants to expand their experience into surveying and geospatial project work.

Previous survey drafting experience is valuable, but it is not required. If you have a solid Civil 3D foundation, strong attention to detail, and experience collaborating with technical project teams, RETTEW can help you develop the survey-specific skills needed for the role.

You'll support projects across transportation, land development, municipal, energy, environmental, and other infrastructure markets while working closely with survey field teams, project managers, engineers, and other technical professionals.

Work Environment

Workplace Designation: Hybrid
Locations: Williamsport, PA or Mechanicsburg, PA

This position combines in-office collaboration with remote-work flexibility in alignment with RETTEW's applicable hybrid schedule.

What You'll Do

As a Survey CAD Designer, you will use Civil 3D to transform field and project information into accurate drawings, mapping, and survey deliverables.

Depending on your previous experience, you may work with boundary and topographic surveys, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, subdivision plans, easement and right-of-way exhibits, existing-conditions mapping, construction stakeout information, and other survey deliverables.

You'll collaborate directly with survey field teams and project managers while developing deeper knowledge of survey data, standards, workflows, and production methods.

As a Survey/GIS CAD Designer at RETTEW, you will:

  • Prepare and revise survey drawings, mapping, exhibits, and other project deliverables using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Work with field and project data to support accurate CAD production.
  • Develop and maintain drawing layouts, annotation, linework, surfaces, points, and other Civil 3D elements as applicable to project needs.
  • Incorporate redlines, review comments, CAD standards, templates, and project requirements into deliverables.
  • Support preparation of boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, subdivision, easement, right-of-way, existing-conditions, and other survey drawings.
  • Collaborate with survey field crews to understand field information and resolve questions or inconsistencies.
  • Coordinate with Professional Land Surveyors and Survey Project Managers regarding project requirements and deliverables.
  • Coordinate survey information with engineering, design, and other multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Support quality-control processes to help ensure drawings are accurate, complete, and consistent with project standards.
  • Develop proficiency with survey field data, GPS/GNSS information, total-station data, point files, drone/UAS data, point clouds, and other survey technologies as project needs and experience progress.
Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated working proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D in a professional CAD, design, engineering, surveying, or infrastructure environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate CAD production.
  • Ability to incorporate technical review comments and revisions into drawings.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with project managers, technical professionals, multidisciplinary teams, and field personnel.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Associate degree in CAD, drafting, surveying technology, civil engineering technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.

Additional Experience We Value

  • Survey drafting or survey-production experience.
  • Boundary or topographic survey plan preparation.
  • ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey experience.
  • Surface creation and topographic mapping.
  • Survey point management, point groups, and linework.
  • GPS/GNSS or total-station data.
  • Subdivision plans and plats.
  • Easement or right-of-way exhibits.
  • Existing-conditions or utility mapping.
  • Reading deeds, plats, easements, or survey records.
  • Drone/UAS or point-cloud data.
  • Survey drawing QA/QC.

Survey-specific experience is not required. Candidates with strong Civil 3D experience from other civil engineering or infrastructure disciplines are encouraged to apply.

What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications.
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), giving employees a stake in RETTEW's long-term success.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.
  • Hybrid work environment with structured flexibility.
  • An opportunity to expand strong Civil 3D skills into surveying, mapping, and geospatial applications.
  • Hands-on exposure to field-to-finish survey workflows and technologies.
  • Training and mentorship from experienced survey professionals.
  • Opportunities to work across transportation, land development, municipal, environmental, energy, and infrastructure projects.
  • Professional development and opportunities for continued technical and career growth.
