Computer Aided Design Design Engineer information

What is a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer aided design (CAD) design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

Job description

CAD Designer / Engineer The CAD Designer / Engineer transforms engineering concepts and customer requirements into detailed, production-ready drawings and 3D models that support manufacturing and innovation. Working with aerospace, defense, space, automotive, energy, and other precision-engineering applications, this position plays a key role in developing high-quality components and assemblies. From high performance aerospace assemblies to precision-engineered wheel systems, the Designer helps turn concepts into manufacturable designs while maintaining a strong focus on safety, accuracy, quality, and customer requirements.

Design & Drafting • Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models of components, assemblies, fixtures, and tooling using CAD software. • Interpret customer drawings, specifications, models, and technical documentation to develop accurate manufacturing designs. • Apply GD&T, dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, and other engineering requirements to drawings. • Modify and update existing drawings and 3D models based on engineering changes, customer revisions, or manufacturing requirements.

• Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), part lists, and other supporting design documentation as required. • Review designs for accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, and compliance with applicable requirements. • Support the development of aerospace components, precision wheel systems, assemblies, and other customer-specific products. • Assist with the design and documentation of new products, components, tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing processes. • Maintain accurate revision control and ensure current drawings and documentation are properly released and maintained. Manufacturing & Engineering Support • Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and other departments to resolve design and production issues. • Collaborate with machinists, fabricators, engineers, and other manufacturing personnel to improve manufacturability and production efficiency. • Provide design support and clarification to manufacturing personnel when questions arise regarding drawings or specifications. • Assist in identifying design issues, dimensional conflicts, tolerance concerns, and other potential manufacturing problems.

• Participate in design reviews and provide recommendations for improvements when appropriate. • Support prototype, first article, and production activities as needed. • Assist with troubleshooting and developing solutions for design-related manufacturing issues. • Incorporate feedback from manufacturing and quality personnel into drawings and design revisions.

• Maintain organized engineering and design files in accordance with company procedures. Customer & Project Support • Review customer requirements, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for completeness and accuracy. • Communicate with internal teams regarding project requirements, design changes, and production needs. • Support projects from initial concept and design through manufacturing and final production. • Help ensure projects remain aligned with customer specifications, quality requirements, and established deadlines.

• Maintain professional and effective communication with customers and internal departments when design-related information is required. Qualifications • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy • Effective written and verbal communication skills • Strong organization, time-management, and problem-solving abilities • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines • Basic understanding of accounts receivable and accounts payable processes • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and general computer applications • Ability to learn and use ERP and accounting systems • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple departments • Professional judgment and discretion when handling confidential information Minimum Experience and Education • High school diploma or equivalent • Proven experience as a mechanical designer/drafter in aerospace, automotive, or related precision engineering fields.

• Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks or CATIA) for both 2D drafting and 3D modeling. • Understanding of GD&T and manufacturing processes. Physical Requirements • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods • Frequent use of a keyboard, mouse, telephone, and standard office equipment • Ability to move throughout the facility and use stairs • Job requires occasional walking, standing, reaching, bending, and carrying • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 15 pounds occasionally Work Environment This position is primarily performed in a professional office located within an active manufacturing facility. Employees may be exposed to intermittent machining, fabrication, and material-handling noise. Employees must remain alert to machinery, forklifts, materials, and changing floor conditions; follow posted safety rules and designated walkways; and wear required personal protective equipment, which includes safety glasses and closed-toe shoes.
