Computer Aided Design Design Engineer information

What does a CAD design engineer do?

A CAD design engineer creates detailed technical drawings and 3D models using computer-aided design software to develop products, components, or systems. They collaborate with engineers and manufacturers to ensure designs meet specifications and standards, often working with tools like AutoCAD or SolidWorks and requiring strong technical skills. Their work supports the manufacturing and engineering processes across various industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or related engineering fields. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, along with familiarity with relevant industry standards and certifications, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for delivering precise, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support efficient product development.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High-level positions often include bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing that contribute to total compensation.

Is CAD engineer a good career?

A CAD engineer designs and creates technical drawings using computer-aided design software, which is essential in industries like manufacturing, architecture, and engineering. The role offers steady employment opportunities, requires technical skills and certifications, and often involves working with tools like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. It can be a rewarding career for those interested in technical design and problem-solving.

What is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for products, parts, or structures. These engineers collaborate with other engineering teams to turn conceptual ideas into precise digital designs, which are then used for manufacturing or construction. Their work ensures that designs meet the required specifications, safety standards, and functional needs. CAD Design Engineers are crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, architecture, and manufacturing.

How does a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a CAD Design Engineer, collaboration with other departments—such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management—is an integral part of the job. You’ll frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure that your designs align with manufacturability, cost targets, and regulatory standards. Effective communication is essential, as you’ll often need to translate complex technical drawings into actionable insights for team members with diverse backgrounds. This interdepartmental teamwork not only helps streamline the design-to-production process but also provides valuable learning opportunities for professional growth.

What is the difference between Computer Aided Design Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectComputer Aided Design Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or design, proficiency in CAD softwareRequires engineering degree, often with specialization in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesManufacturing plants, R&D labs, engineering departments
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including automotive, aerospace, product designPrimarily in mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment design

The Computer Aided Design Design Engineer focuses on creating detailed digital models using CAD software, often working closely with product development teams. Mechanical Design Engineers also use CAD but typically have a broader role in designing mechanical systems and components. While both roles require similar technical skills and work environments, their focus areas differ, with CAD Design Engineers emphasizing digital modeling and Mechanical Design Engineers concentrating on mechanical functionality and system integration.

What is AutoCAD salary?

The salary for a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Design Engineer who uses AutoCAD typically ranges from $55,000 to $85,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled users with certifications and experience in 3D modeling or other CAD software may earn higher salaries.

Job description

Huber Cabinet Works is seeking a Microvellum Programmer & CAD Engineer to join our team.

We are a custom architectural millwork company based in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, specializing in high-end commercial interiors.

We are looking for a skilled, detail-oriented professional whose primary strength is Microvellum programming, while also possessing the ability to contribute within our CAD engineering department on fabrication drawings and production support.

About the Role

Our CAD engineering team manages submittal and fabrication shop drawings from start to finish. This role is centered around Microvellum programming, taking fully corrected and approved AutoCAD cabinetry and casework drawings and converting them into CNC-ready programs, parts, assemblies, and nesting layouts for production.

This individual will also work directly alongside our CAD engineering team assisting with submittal and fabrication drawings, incorporating field measurements, addressing architect review comments, and helping prepare projects for production.

We are also actively exploring new ways to expand the use of Microvellum throughout our broader millwork operations and are looking for someone excited to help contribute to that growth.

Key Responsibilities

Microvellum & CNC Programming

  • Program approved AutoCAD cabinetry and millwork drawings into Microvellum
  • Build parts, assemblies, and nesting layouts for CNC machining
  • Interpret detailed shop drawings and translate design intent into machine-ready output
  • Optimize sheet usage to minimize waste and maximize CNC efficiency
  • Review and refine programs to reduce production issues prior to release to the shop floor
  • Coordinate with the shop, CAD engineering team, and Project Managers to align programming with production and field requirements
  • Help expand the use of Microvellum into additional custom millwork applications over time

CAD Engineering Responsibilities

  • Assist with fabrication drawing production alongside the CAD engineering team during non-programming cycles
  • Revise shop drawings per architect comments and incorporate field measurements and site conditions
  • Read and interpret architectural floor plans, elevations, and construction details to support accurate fabrication drawings

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience within the architectural millwork industry
  • Hands-on Microvellum programming experience including parts, nesting, and CNC output
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for reading, interpreting, and producing millwork shop drawings
  • Strong understanding of cabinetry and millwork construction methods and assembly details
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and teams
  • Experience with BSolid or other CNC programming platforms preferred
  • Interest in expanding Microvellum into broader custom millwork applications preferred

Compensation

Pay range: $70,000 – $110,000 depending on experience

Compensation will be based on experience, skill level, and overall ability to contribute across programming and CAD engineering support.

Why Join Huber Cabinet Works

  • Established and respected company with strong contractor relationships throughout Chicago
  • High-end, detail-driven projects
  • Direct impact on production quality, efficiency, and operational growth
  • Opportunity to help shape and expand Microvellum-driven workflows within the company

Whether your strengths are primarily in Microvellum programming or a combination of programming and CAD engineering support, we encourage you to apply.
