Job description

Senior Substation Project Engineer

At HDR, you will help shape how electricity is generated, transmitted and delivered as global energy demands grow by working with industry‑recognised engineers and scientists.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the work of design engineers with the full multidisciplinary team throughout the project’s development
  • Establish client relations and participate in marketing, design, and production meetings
  • Assume technical lead within a project execution team
  • Participate in reviews with governing agencies for code compliance
  • Conduct schematic, design development and contract document work sessions at the project site with the Project Manager and other disciplines
  • Coordinate workload to complete project deliverables on schedule
  • Work with the Project Manager and Project Controller on project reviews with management as needed
  • Direct the activities of other engineering professionals and act as a mentor to other staff members as needed
  • Perform other duties as required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (preferred)
  • 10+ years of substation design experience (preferred)
  • Experience with substation physical/outdoor design, including yard layouts, plans, sections, details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and bills of materials
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • Proficient with industry software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Aspen, ETAP, EasyPower, etc.
  • Experience preparing specifications, drawings, and other engineering documents
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience
  • Professional engineering license recognised by the licensing board for the location of the position (e.g., PE, P.Eng)
  • Extensive experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and standard Power Market Sector design software (e.g., PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit)
  • Commitment to being an active participant in employee‑owned culture
