What is a computational software developer?

A Computational Software Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains software systems that perform complex mathematical, scientific, or engineering computations. They often work in fields such as scientific research, engineering, finance, and data analysis, creating tools that simulate processes, analyze data, or solve computational problems. These developers typically possess strong programming skills in languages like Python, C++, or MATLAB, and have a solid understanding of algorithms, mathematics, and domain-specific knowledge relevant to their projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computational software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, C++, or Java), a solid understanding of algorithms, and typically a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with computational libraries (such as NumPy, SciPy, or TensorFlow), version control systems like Git, and experience with high-performance or parallel computing are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills and qualities enable developers to create robust, efficient computational solutions and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by computational software developers, and how can they be addressed?

Computational Software Developers often encounter challenges such as optimizing code for high-performance computing, ensuring numerical accuracy, and integrating complex algorithms with existing systems. These challenges can be addressed by staying up-to-date with the latest computational techniques, collaborating closely with domain experts, and utilizing profiling tools to identify performance bottlenecks. Regular code reviews and testing are also essential to maintain reliability and foster knowledge sharing within multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

Valius overview
At Valius, we believe that the future of cancer care will be defined by "maximalist" diagnostics: deep, comprehensive assessments of DNA, RNA, and protein designed to give patients and their care teams the best possible understanding of how their tumor works and what its vulnerabilities are.
We're building the diagnostics and bioinformatics company to power this future, starting by applying this approach to patients with challenging cancers. In our first year, we worked with over 75 of these patients and, in many cases, identified plausible therapeutic targets which had not been discovered previously. This coming year, we're on track to scale our patient volume significantly, all while bringing new diagnostic modalities (e.g., single-cell transcriptomics) and analytical approaches into clinical care for the very first time.
We've just raised a $13.5M seed round, led by 8VC and Basis Set Ventures, and are looking for people passionate about changing cancer care to join our growing team.
Software engineer role
We're hiring a software engineer to build the infrastructure and products that bring our molecular insights to life. This role spans the full stack: on the front end, you'll craft AI-powered interfaces that help patients, care teams, and Valius scientists intuitively explore complex molecular data. On the back end, you'll own the infrastructure, pipelines, and tooling that powers our internal and external applications. You'll also work with our computational biologist team to process and manage patient data.
You'll have significant ownership from day one, including direct exposure to, and regular meetings with, the founding team. As we grow, you'll have the potential to develop into a broader engineering leadership role.
This role will be expected to work out of our beautiful San Francisco office four days a week.
What you'll do
  • Shape our roadmap: Partner with our science team, founding team, and fellow engineers to collaboratively develop roadmaps for internal and external applications.
  • Own end-to-end feature delivery: Own the planning and delivery of road mapped features.
  • Build intuitive front-end applications: Design and develop AI-powered interfaces that make complex molecular data accessible and actionable for patients, clinicians, and scientists.
  • Own back-end infrastructure and pipelines: Build and maintain the systems that ingest, process, and manage patient molecular data reliably.
  • Partner with computational biologists: Work closely with our science team to develop tools that accelerate their work.
  • Uphold engineering rigor: Write clean, well-tested code and contribute to a high standard of reliability and maintainability across the codebase.
  • Contribute across the company as needed: Pitch in on cross-functional initiatives as we scale.

What you'll bring
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong foundation in front-end (React, TypeScript, Tailwind) and back-end (Python, FastAPI, cloud infrastructure, data pipelines) development
  • Experience contributing to roadmap development and proactively shaping product strategy
  • Track record of taking ownership and shipping features end-to-end
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to collaborate with non-engineering stakeholders
  • Commitment to our patient-focused mission
  • Interest in working for a small, early-stage startup

Other nice to haves
  • Experience in life sciences, genomics, or bioinformatics
  • Experience working at an early-stage startup
  • Background in data engineering or working with large datasets
  • Experience integrating AI features in production applications
  • Interest in growing into an engineering leadership role as the company scales

What we'll bring
  • Competitive salary and equity compensation
  • Generous refresh grants
  • Comprehensive benefits (health, dental, vision, 401(k))
  • Genuine investment in your professional development
  • Fun, mission-driven team culture
