Computational Software Developer information

What is a computational software developer?

A Computational Software Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains software systems that perform complex mathematical, scientific, or engineering computations. They often work in fields such as scientific research, engineering, finance, and data analysis, creating tools that simulate processes, analyze data, or solve computational problems. These developers typically possess strong programming skills in languages like Python, C++, or MATLAB, and have a solid understanding of algorithms, mathematics, and domain-specific knowledge relevant to their projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computational software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, C++, or Java), a solid understanding of algorithms, and typically a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with computational libraries (such as NumPy, SciPy, or TensorFlow), version control systems like Git, and experience with high-performance or parallel computing are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills and qualities enable developers to create robust, efficient computational solutions and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by computational software developers, and how can they be addressed?

Computational Software Developers often encounter challenges such as optimizing code for high-performance computing, ensuring numerical accuracy, and integrating complex algorithms with existing systems. These challenges can be addressed by staying up-to-date with the latest computational techniques, collaborating closely with domain experts, and utilizing profiling tools to identify performance bottlenecks. Regular code reviews and testing are also essential to maintain reliability and foster knowledge sharing within multidisciplinary teams.

Salary: $143 500 – $166 500
Vacation: 5 weeks per year
Benefits: Group insurance (including dental care), virtual care, lifestyle spending account (all available after 3 months of service)

Our current needs

Nord Quantique is developing the software platform and operational infrastructure required to run increasingly complex quantum computing systems at scale. As our systems evolve, reliability, observability, security, and operational automation become critical to both internal R&D and future production environments.

We are seeking a senior software developer to join our Infrastructure & Operations team. This team develops and operates the foundational infrastructure, orchestration systems, and operational services that support experimental systems, simulation backends, and cloud-accessible quantum computing workflows.

This role sits at the intersection of software engineering, infrastructure, and operational reliability. The successful candidate will help design and evolve the systems that ensure Nord Quantique’s software platform remains scalable, observable, secure, and operationally robust in a highly dynamic R&D environment.

Keys responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain infrastructure and operational systems supporting Nord Quantique’s software platform.
  • Contribute to the architecture and evolution of orchestration, deployment, and operational management systems.
  • Develop tooling and workflows supporting reliability, observability, security, and operational safety.
  • Contribute to cloud infrastructure management, HPC integration, deployment automation, and operational monitoring.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to support secure and reliable access to computational and experimental resources.
  • Contribute to software quality through architecture discussions, code reviews, testing, debugging, and operational best practices.

Education and experience requirements:

  • BSc or MSc in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing or operating software systems in an R&D, cloud, infrastructure, or technically ambitious environment.
  • Experience working with distributed systems, operational infrastructure, or production software platforms.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary environments involving close collaboration between software, infrastructure, and technical teams.

Sought expertise and knowledge:

  • Strong software development skills in at least one modern systems or infrastructure programming language such as Go, Rust, or Python.
  • Experience with distributed systems, orchestration frameworks, or operational automation.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines, CI/CD workflows, or infrastructure management.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, logging, observability, and reliability engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with security, access control, or operational safety considerations in shared computing environments.
  • Experience with HPC systems, cluster management, or large-scale computational infrastructure is considered an asset.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, cloud-native infrastructure, or secure partner-facing APIs is considered an asset.
  • Advanced level in English, to communicate with international team members
  • Intermediate knowledge of French is an asset.

Sought profile:

  • Strong ownership mindset and ability to drive complex technical initiatives.
  • Ability to promote operational best practices through collaboration, pragmatism, and technical leadership across teams.
  • Strong judgment in balancing operational rigor with the flexibility required in an interdisciplinary R&D environment.
  • Commitment to software quality, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

Nord Quantique is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in its training, workplaces, and activities. We encourage applications from diverse backgrounds and traditionally marginalized groups.
