What is computational modeling simulation multiphysics?

Computational modeling simulation multiphysics refers to the use of computer-based models to simulate and analyze systems that involve multiple interacting physical phenomena—such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, electromagnetics, and structural mechanics—all at once. This approach allows researchers and engineers to predict complex real-world behavior, optimize designs, and reduce the need for expensive prototypes. Multiphysics simulations are widely used in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and biomedical engineering, where accurate modeling of coupled physical processes is critical.

What are common challenges faced by professionals in computational modeling simulation multiphysics, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics roles is managing the complexity of integrating multiple physical phenomena, such as thermal, structural, and fluid dynamics, into a single simulation. This often requires a deep understanding of both the underlying physics and the numerical methods used by simulation software. Collaborating closely with domain experts and maintaining clear communication within multidisciplinary teams can help address these challenges. Additionally, staying updated with advances in simulation tools and best practices through continuous learning is key to overcoming technical hurdles and ensuring accurate results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computational modeling simulation multiphysics engineer, and why are they important?

A strong background in physics, engineering, mathematics, and computational science—typically with an advanced degree—is essential for a Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics Engineer. Proficiency in simulation software such as ANSYS, COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, and programming languages like Python or C++ is commonly required, along with familiarity with high-performance computing environments. Analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this field. These capabilities enable accurate modeling of complex physical phenomena, efficient collaboration, and successful project outcomes in research and industry settings.

What is the difference between Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics vs Computational Engineer?

AspectComputational Modeling Simulation MultiphysicsComputational Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires degrees in engineering, physics, or related fields; certifications in simulation software are commonSimilar educational background; often holds engineering degrees and software certifications
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in R&D labs, engineering firms, or manufacturing settings focusing on complex simulationsInvolved in product development, software development, or systems design in various industries
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing for advanced simulationsApplied across industries for designing, analyzing, and optimizing systems and products

While both roles involve computational skills and engineering principles, Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics specializes in complex, multi-physics simulations, whereas Computational Engineer focuses on designing and implementing computational solutions across various engineering projects.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated translational scientist to join the Predictive Sciences group within Asia Translational Medicine (ATM), where quantitative modeling, clinical pharmacology, biomarkers, and translational data science are integrated to enable model-informed research and development. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape global clinical development by leveraging Asia's rapidly evolving biomedical innovation ecosystem, diverse patient populations, and growing translational research capabilities to generate actionable insights with enterprise-wide impact. In this role, you will partner with regional and global, multidisciplinary clinical and translational teams to develop and apply cutting-edge quantitative approaches that inform clinical development strategies and deepen our understanding of causal disease biology and therapeutic response.

Working across multiple therapeutic areas and advanced therapeutic modalities - including therapeutic proteins, antibodies, and nucleic acids (particularly, siRNA and antisense oligonucleotides) - you will integrate mechanistic modeling, biomarkers, translational -omics, and clinical trial data to enable model-informed drug development. You will also help advance state-of-art predictive modeling methodologies and computational capabilities that strengthen quantitative translational science across the portfolio.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Serve as the Predictive Sciences representative on multidisciplinary translational medicine teams, developing and applying quantitative strategies that contribute to biomarker strategy and inform clinical development and model-informed decision making.

  • Develop and apply mechanistic modeling approaches - including PK/PD, PBPK/PD, QSP, and AI/ML-enabled analytics - to integrate clinical and translational data, characterize human pharmacology (including ethnopharmacology), evaluate alternative trial designs, and forecast the probability of technical success for different dosing regimens, combination strategies, patient populations, and regional standards of care.

  • Generate quantitative evidence that informs critical project and portfolio decisions, including candidate progression, clinical development strategy, and investment prioritization.

  • Partner closely with Clinical Pharmacology, Biomarkers, Bioanalytical Sciences, Clinical Development, and other partnering functions to address complex scientific questions and advance translational hypotheses.

  • Communicate quantitative strategies and modeling results to project teams, governance committees, regulatory agencies, and external scientific audiences with clarity and scientific rigor.

  • Advance Predictive Sciences through the development and application of innovative modeling methodologies, computational technologies, and reusable quantitative frameworks with impact across therapeutic areas and development programs.

Why you?Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • PhD, PharmD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Quantitative and/or Clinical Pharmacology, Bioengineering, Mathematics, Medicine, or a related quantitative discipline.

  • Experience in mechanistic modeling approaches, including PK/PD, PBPK, and/or QSP, applied to drug development.

  • Experience with use of AI/ML, virtual population, or digital twin approaches for executing in silico clinical trial simulation is advantageous.

  • Experience with integrating quantitative modeling with clinical pharmacology, biomarkers, relevant clinical endpoints, and biological/disease mechanisms to inform translational and clinical development.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Experience working in multidisciplinary drug development teams (for Associate Director-level). Fluency in English (written and oral) is required.

  • Experience within immunology, hepatology, respiratory, renal, oncology, or related therapeutic areas.

  • Experience applying predictive modeling approaches to biologics, oligonucleotides, or other advanced therapeutic modalities.

  • Track record of scientific publication, conference presentations, and application of model-informed drug development in research and/or development projects.

We have flexibility to hire at the Manager (entry) or Associate Director level, depending on the candidate's experience and expertise. This position will be based at one of GSK's sites in Upper Providence, Pennsylvania (US), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (US), GSK Asia House, Rochester Park (Singapore), or Zhangjiang Park, Shanghai (China). This role is offered as a hybrid position with an expectation to be on-site 2-3 days per week. Occasional travel may be required.
