What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics Engineer, and why are they important?

A strong background in physics, engineering, mathematics, and computational science—typically with an advanced degree—is essential for a Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics Engineer. Proficiency in simulation software such as ANSYS, COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, and programming languages like Python or C++ is commonly required, along with familiarity with high-performance computing environments. Analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this field. These capabilities enable accurate modeling of complex physical phenomena, efficient collaboration, and successful project outcomes in research and industry settings.

What is computational modeling simulation multiphysics?

Computational modeling simulation multiphysics refers to the use of computer-based models to simulate and analyze systems that involve multiple interacting physical phenomena—such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, electromagnetics, and structural mechanics—all at once. This approach allows researchers and engineers to predict complex real-world behavior, optimize designs, and reduce the need for expensive prototypes. Multiphysics simulations are widely used in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and biomedical engineering, where accurate modeling of coupled physical processes is critical.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics roles, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in Computational Modeling Simulation Multiphysics roles is managing the complexity of integrating multiple physical phenomena, such as thermal, structural, and fluid dynamics, into a single simulation. This often requires a deep understanding of both the underlying physics and the numerical methods used by simulation software. Collaborating closely with domain experts and maintaining clear communication within multidisciplinary teams can help address these challenges. Additionally, staying updated with advances in simulation tools and best practices through continuous learning is key to overcoming technical hurdles and ensuring accurate results.

Job description

Landrum & Brown is a global aviation consulting firm with airports at the core of our DNA. We bring passion and creativity to solve the most complex global aviation challenges with the potential to enhance the world.
Serving airports and other aviation clients for more than 70 years across all seven continents, our aviation consulting practice includes both planning and development services that span activation planning, airfield and airspace, business and finance, commercial development, environmental, ground transportation, master planning and strategy, terminal planning and design.
Job Summary
Landrum & Brown is seeking an Aviation Senior Consultant with a strong background in airspace modeling, simulation, and operational analytics to join a specialist Aviation Planning and Advisory team.
This role is ideal for a technically minded aviation professional who is deeply passionate about how airports, airspace systems, and air travel function at a systems level. You will work alongside highly specialized aviation planners, analysts, and operational experts on projects that directly influence airport efficiency, airspace optimization, capacity planning, and the future of aviation operations.
This is not a general consulting role. It is an opportunity to join a niche aviation-focused practice where genuine enthusiasm for aviation science, operational performance, and the mechanics of air travel is highly valued.
This position could be based from ANY of our US locations, including San Francisco, Cincinnati, Washington DC, and New York.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
The Opportunity
As an Aviation Senior Consultant, you will lead and support advanced airspace and operational simulation studies for airports, ANSPs, aviation authorities, and infrastructure programs.
You will apply sophisticated modeling tools, operational data analysis, and simulation methodologies to solve complex aviation challenges related to:
  • Airspace capacity and efficiency
  • Air traffic flow optimization
  • Airport and terminal airspace operations
  • Delay analysis and operational bottlenecks
  • Future demand and traffic forecasting
  • Runway and taxiway utilization
  • Scenario testing and operational simulation
  • Strategic aviation planning and infrastructure development

The role combines technical modeling expertise with aviation operational insight and will involve close collaboration with airport planners, operational stakeholders, regulators, and aviation leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute airspace and operational simulation models for airport and airspace studies.
  • Analyze complex operational datasets to identify trends, constraints, and performance opportunities.
  • Utilize industry-standard aviation modeling platforms including:
  • SIMMOD
  • TAAM
  • AirTOp
  • Conduct scenario testing and operational assessments for existing and future aviation systems.
  • Support airport master planning and aviation infrastructure programs through quantitative analysis.
  • Translate technical simulation outputs into actionable operational recommendations.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and client deliverables.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary aviation planning and engineering teams.
  • Contribute technical expertise during client workshops and stakeholder meetings.

What We're Looking For:
Experience
