What is a Computational Genomics job?

A Computational Genomics job involves using computational and statistical approaches to analyze genomic data. Professionals in this field develop algorithms, build models, and apply machine learning to interpret DNA sequences, gene expression, and other biological data. They work in research, healthcare, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries to advance precision medicine, drug discovery, and disease understanding. Strong programming skills, bioinformatics knowledge, and expertise in data analysis are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computational Genomics position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Genomics professional, you need a strong background in biology, statistics, and computer science, typically supported by a relevant degree such as bioinformatics, genomics, or computational biology. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python, R, or Perl), bioinformatics tools (e.g., BLAST, GATK), and platforms like Linux/UNIX is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams are valuable soft skills. These abilities are crucial for accurately analyzing complex genomic data, developing robust workflows, and translating findings into actionable biological insights.

What are the most common daily responsibilities for someone working in Computational Genomics?

As a professional in Computational Genomics, your typical day may involve analyzing large-scale genomic datasets, developing and maintaining bioinformatics pipelines, and collaborating closely with experimental biologists and other computational scientists. You will often be tasked with interpreting complex biological data, troubleshooting data quality issues, and preparing detailed reports or visualizations of your findings. Additionally, you may participate in team meetings to discuss project goals, new research findings, or workflow improvements. This role requires balancing independent analysis with frequent interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure scientific projects progress efficiently.

Job description

Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist in Computational Genomics to join Vertex's global Data and Computational Sciences organization. This role is embedded within the Computational Genomics team and partners closely with Bostonbased research groups to design, analyze, and interpret human genetics, genomics, and sequencingbased studies that advance drug discovery and development programs across multiple therapeutic areas. The successful candidate will provide scientific leadership in the application of human genetic analyses, genomics, and computational biology to biological discovery, target validation, and mechanistic understanding. This role requires strong technical depth, independent scientific judgment, and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights for crossfunctional project teams. This position is based in Boston, MA and is eligible for onsite or hybrid work, with an expectation of at least three days per week onsite.

Key responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior computational genomics partner to discovery and project teams, acting as the primary bioinformatics and genomics subjectmatter expert for assigned programs
  • Lead the design, analysis, and interpretation of human genetics, genomics, and sequencingbased studies to address key biological and translational questions
  • Apply sophisticated computational and statistical approaches to analyze largescale human genetic, genomic, and functional genomics datasets, integrating best practices and emerging methods from the field
  • Distill complex analyses into clear conclusions, recommendations, and next steps for diverse scientific audiences, including noncomputational stakeholders
  • Provide scientific ownership and accountability for human genetics and genomics deliverables, ensuring highquality, timely outputs that support project decisionmaking
  • Partner with computational and genomics method development teams to identify opportunities to improve robustness, scalability, and usability of internal analysis approaches
  • Stay current with advances in human genetics, genomics technologies, and computational biology, and proactively advocate for approaches that could accelerate Vertex's research programs

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience applying computational methods and bioinformatics tools to largescale biological datasets; proficiency in R or Python, Unix/Linux environments, and highperformance computing systems.
  • Solid grounding in statistics and genetics, including the role of human genetic variation in disease biology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across crossfunctional teams and manage multiple priorities in a fastpaced research environment.
  • A collaborative, growthoriented mindset, with a commitment to scientific rigor, continuous learning, and supporting team success.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, human genetics, systems biology, bioengineering, or a related field, with 3+ years of relevant postdoctoral or industry experience; or Master's degree in a related field with 8+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the analysis, visualization, and interpretation of human genetics, genomic, and nextgeneration sequencing (NGS) data.
