What does a computational biology intern do?

A Computational Biology Intern applies computational and statistical techniques to analyze biological data, such as genomics, proteomics, or molecular simulations. They work with large datasets, develop algorithms, and use bioinformatics tools to extract meaningful insights. Interns may also assist in coding, machine learning applications, and data visualization to support research projects. Their role often involves collaborating with scientists and engineers to solve biological problems using computational approaches.

What are typical projects or tasks a computational biology intern might work on during their internship?

As a Computational Biology Intern, you may analyze large biological datasets, such as genomic or proteomic data, using programming and statistical tools. Common tasks include writing scripts to automate data processing, visualizing experimental results, and assisting with developing or testing new computational algorithms. You might also help maintain or curate biological databases and collaborate closely with laboratory scientists and senior bioinformaticians to interpret results. This hands-on experience helps you develop technical expertise and gain valuable insight into real-world research methods in computational biology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the computational biology intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Biology Intern, you need a solid understanding of biology, statistics, and programming, often supported by coursework or research in bioinformatics or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Python or R, version control systems such as Git, and biological databases is highly beneficial. Job description

Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world's deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

The Srivatsan Lab (Basic Sciences Division, Fred Hutch) is a computational biology lab focused on developing computational tools and methods for analysis of high throughput single-cell genomics data. We work in extensive collaborative partnerships with bench scientists to tackle questions related to cellular differentiation, lineage decisions, regulatory mechanisms, somatic variation, and the organization of tissues.

We are seeking a temporary Research Intern (hourly) to perform investigative computational experiments. Further information on the lab's research projects can be found at: https://www.srivatsan-lab.com

The Srivatsan Lab provides a supportive environment that strongly emphasizes individualized mentoring. We will collaborate with you to identify and develop a plan to achieve your professional development goals.ย

Responsibilities

  • Perform dry-lab experiments to support investigative work.
  • Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments.
  • Interpret and report on experimental results.
  • Attend lab meetings.
  • Present scientific findings at lab meeting.
  • General lab/cluster cleaning and organization.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Other Expectations

  • Work collaboratively within the Srivatsan Lab staff.
  • Show respect to all members of the lab and the broader Hutch community.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must be currently enrolled as undergraduate in university or community college institution.
  • Applicants must have excellent computer skills, including the ability to use MS word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Ability to learn new tools and content quickly and independently.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Applicants must be flexible and able to work independently without supervision.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.30 to $30.13 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees access to a retirement savings plan, an employee assistance program, paid sick leave (1 hour for every 30 hours worked), and prorated paid holidays (up to 11 days per year).
