SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

IT INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER, VIRTUALIZATION & HARDWARE

As an IT Infrastructure Engineer within the infrastructure team, you will collaborate with our various internal teams to find innovative solutions to SpaceX's growing infrastructure demands. You will ensure the quality and reliability of systems throughout the hardware and software lifecycle. Responsibilities include implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of IT systems and infrastructure in an extremely fast paced and dynamic environment. You will join the team responsible for scaling and supporting SpaceX’s growing data center infrastructure, virtualization and Kubernetes environments. You should have strong opinions about how to design, test, and qualify all aspects of data center infrastructure, hardware platforms, and virtualization. You should be familiar with industry standard hardware and software lifecycle and use best practices and keep in touch with internal and external business stakeholders to enhance products and services for the organization. Most importantly, you should be prepared to build SpaceX’s next generation of data center platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Champion the system and validation process for SpaceX’s data center server hardware products. This includes network connectivity, power delivery and functional aspects of the servers

  • Implement and maintain a scalable and robust VMware environment to support the organization's virtualization needs

  • Lead the project management of hardware development programs from inception to final product shipment

  • Data center deployments and troubleshooting production operational issues in our data centers

  • Help our team of engineers and server partners to develop, support, and sustain purpose-built servers, with emphasis on a resilient design and high availability

  • Identify and implement fixes and find efficiencies in our large VMware environment supporting critical applications across the organization

  • Collaborate regularly with internal SpaceX teams to understand requirements, cost-optimize solutions, and cultivate product knowledge

  • Expect to drive the hardware procurement process from initial concept, architectural draft, product requirement documents, to deployment coordination and operational support

  • You will generate and review validation plans, oversee execution and test reports across multiple disciplines including hardware, firmware, and system software

  • Investigate, triage, and debug hardware and system level issues down to component and firmware level working across the organization

  • Define and qualify second source components and materials to ensure continuity in product line constraints with primary partners and suppliers

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, engineering or other technical field of study and 3+ years of engineering experience in an enterprise environment; OR 5+ years of engineering experience in an enterprise environment in lieu of a degree

  • 1+ years of professional experience working with enterprise class server infrastructure

  • 1+ years of professional experience managing virtualized server environments

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) including tools to monitor, measure, manage, and/or control data center utilization

  • Certifications related to IT infrastructure i.e. CompTIA Server+, CompTIA Network+, CCNP

  • Experience working with multiple hardware vendor architectures

  • Support of CI/CD continuous integration/continuous development pipelines

  • Experience with full lifecycle management of large-scale VMWare environments

  • Board level design and validation experience

  • Linux and Windows OS system administration experience
