What is compressed work?

Compressed work schedules are alternative work arrangements where employees work longer hours over fewer days, typically completing the standard full-time hours in less than five days per week. For example, someone might work four 10-hour days instead of five 8-hour days, resulting in an extra day off each week. This arrangement can help improve work-life balance, reduce commuting time, and increase flexibility for employees. However, not all workplaces or roles are suitable for compressed schedules, and implementation often depends on employer policies and operational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in compressed work?

To thrive in a compressed work schedule role, strong time management, self-discipline, and the ability to meet job-specific qualifications are essential. Familiarity with productivity tools, remote collaboration platforms, and scheduling software is often required to efficiently manage condensed hours. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills help professionals navigate workload fluctuations and maintain team cohesion. These skills ensure that productivity and work quality remain high despite nontraditional scheduling.

What are common challenges employees face when transitioning to a compressed work schedule?

Employees moving to a compressed work schedule often find it challenging to adjust to longer daily hours, which can lead to fatigue if not managed well. Balancing personal commitments and maintaining productivity during extended shifts may require new strategies, such as prioritizing tasks and taking regular breaks. Additionally, coordinating with team members who are on traditional schedules can sometimes create communication gaps, so proactive planning and clear communication are essential for success.

What is the difference between Compressed Work vs Full-Time Work?

AspectCompressed WorkFull-Time Work
Work ScheduleFewer days, longer hours (e.g., 4 days of 10 hours)Standard 5 days, 8 hours per day

Compressed work involves longer workdays but fewer days per week, offering flexibility and potential work-life balance benefits. Full-time work follows a traditional schedule with shorter daily hours but more workdays. Both roles require similar credentials and are used across industries, but compressed schedules are often chosen for flexibility.

Job description

A day in the life

Start your shift at 6:00 a.m. and take command of the shop floor. You’ll move from preventive maintenance rounds on CNC lathes to tackling urgent breakdowns, interpreting mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic prints to diagnose issues fast. Lockout/tag-out is second nature as you execute complex repairs on pumps, valves, gears, and belts. When the work is done, you restore the area to its pre-repair state, update the CMMS with precise notes, and look for the next opportunity to improve the process using Lean and 5S/6S practices. Clear communication and independent problem-solving keep production running smoothly through 2:30 p.m., Monday–Thursday.

Who we are

What you’ll do
  • Perform unsupervised preventive maintenance across multiple machine types, with emphasis on CNC equipment.
  • Complete complex mechanical repairs on machines, pumps, valves, gears, and belts using prints for reference.
  • Execute complex electrical troubleshooting/repairs using electrical schematics and proper LOTO procedures.
  • Handle sophisticated hydraulic and pneumatic diagnostics and repairs using system prints.
  • Return work areas to pre-repair condition; remove and return tools, parts, and supplies to designated areas.
  • Apply and sustain 5S/6S standards within the maintenance department and at job sites.
  • Meet and enforce all Company and production-area safety requirements.
  • Document work in the company’s maintenance work order system and PM database.
  • Use Lean/Continuous Improvement tools to streamline maintenance processes and reduce downtime.
What you bring
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical prints.
  • Skill with measuring tools (calipers, micrometers) and machine tools (lathe, mill, welder, plasma cutter, brake).
  • Familiarity with Quality ISO procedures and Lean Standard Work.
Experience
  • 2 years of technical maintenance experience including mostly lathe machine mechanical, some electrical, hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • 2 years of technical maintenance experience including lathes mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic repair with some electrical, preferred.
Work environment
  • Manufacturing/shop setting with large power equipment cutting metal.
  • Exposure to machine oils and machining fluids (medium to heavy).
  • Frequent standing/walking (10+ hours) and lifting/moving 75+ pounds.
  • Work with sharp metal chips and various power hand tools (drills, grinders, etc.).
