What is a Compost job?

A compost job typically involves managing organic waste materials to create nutrient-rich compost for soil enrichment. Responsibilities may include collecting, sorting, and processing compostable materials, maintaining compost piles, and monitoring decomposition conditions such as moisture and temperature. Workers in composting roles may be employed by farms, waste management facilities, or environmental organizations. The job often requires physical labor and knowledge of sustainable waste practices.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in compost operations?

A typical day in compost operations involves receiving and sorting organic waste, monitoring compost piles for temperature and moisture, and operating equipment such as turners and loaders. Workers routinely check for contamination, record data, and may assist with bagging or preparing finished compost for distribution. Collaboration with team members and adherence to safety and environmental standards are central to the role. The work can be physically demanding and mostly outdoors, offering a hands-on, active environment for those passionate about sustainability. Over time, individuals can advance to supervisory or facility management positions as they gain experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Compost position, and why are they important?

Job description

Phoenix Metro Market | Tank's Green Stuff / Tank's Roll Off

Full-Time • $30K Base + Competitive Commission • Company Vehicle Provided

About Tank's

Tank's is a 39-year-old, family-owned Arizona company built on recycling, sustainability, and taking care of people. Founded in 1986, we produce Arizona's best organic compost, potting mixes, mulch, and soil amendments under the Tank's Green Stuff™ brand - and operate Tank's Roll Off, offering 15- to 40-yard dumpster rentals across the region. We are now expanding into the Phoenix market and need a driven sales professional to own that territory from day one.

The Role

This is a hunter position. You will be on the road every day - visiting stores, building relationships, opening new accounts, and making sure every customer you own is stocked and satisfied. Industry experience is not required. We will teach you everything about our products. What you must bring is hustle, confidence, and a relentless drive to close.

What You'll Do
  • Prospect, pitch, and close new Ace Hardware stores, independent retailers, farms, and nurseries throughout the Phoenix metro on carrying Tank's Green Stuff bagged products.
  • Service existing accounts through regular store visits - checking inventory, building displays, expanding product placement, and identifying upsell opportunities.
  • Deliver bags of product to stores during route visits as needed (company vehicle provided; some physical lifting required).
  • Identify and refer roll off container rental opportunities to customers undertaking construction or cleanup projects.
  • Pitch Tank's aggregate materials - sands, gravels, fill dirt, and specialty mixes - when opportunities arise with contractors and landscapers.
  • Maintain a master account portfolio and log every sales call, store visit, and customer interaction daily - no exceptions.
  • Update and submit a daily sales sheet tracking calls made, visits completed, orders placed, and pipeline status. Weekly reporting to management is required.
Compensation & Benefits
  • $30,000 base salary + Competitive tiered commission structure - details shared during the interview process. Strong performers have significant uncapped earning potential.
  • Company vehicle provided for all customer visits
  • Fuel covered for all business travel
  • Full product training and onboarding
  • Monday–Friday schedule, field-based; occasional Saturday as needed
What We're Looking For

We are not looking for someone who already knows compost from aggregate. We are looking for a competitor - someone who gets fired up by a no and turns it into a yes. If you have sold anything and were great at it, we want to talk.

  • Proven sales track record - you can show us numbers, not just describe your process.
  • High energy and high urgency - you move fast, follow up relentlessly, and hate leaving a deal on the table.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Comfortable with physical work - occasional product delivery is part of the job.
  • Strong people skills - you can build rapport with a hardware store manager and a landscape contractor in the same afternoon.
  • Disciplined with documentation - you log calls and visits daily without being reminded and keep your sales sheet current at all times.

Bonus points for experience with retail buyers, hardware or garden centers, or existing relationships in the Phoenix market.

How to Apply

Send your resume and a brief note telling us about the best deal you ever closed - what made it hard and what made you win it. We read every application personally.
