What is Compose Multiplatform?

Compose Multiplatform is a modern UI framework developed by JetBrains that allows developers to build user interfaces for multiple platforms—such as Android, desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux), and web—using a single codebase in Kotlin. It leverages the declarative programming paradigm, making UI development faster and more maintainable. Compose Multiplatform is an extension of Jetpack Compose, which was originally designed for Android, but now supports cross-platform development with a consistent API. Its goal is to simplify creating beautiful and responsive UIs across devices.

What are some common challenges faced by developers working with Compose Multiplatform, and how can they be addressed?

Developers working with Compose Multiplatform often encounter challenges related to platform-specific differences, ensuring consistent UI/UX across Android, Desktop, and Web, and keeping up with rapid framework updates. Addressing these challenges involves thorough testing on all target platforms, leveraging shared code as much as possible while isolating platform-specific logic, and staying engaged with community forums and documentation for the latest best practices. Collaborating closely with designers and platform experts also helps in creating a seamless user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Compose Multiplatform developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Compose Multiplatform Developer, you need a solid background in Kotlin programming, UI/UX design principles, and experience with multiplatform mobile and desktop application development. Familiarity with Jetpack Compose, IntelliJ IDEA, Android Studio, and version control systems like Git is typically required, along with knowledge of cross-platform frameworks. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help developers collaborate and innovate in a rapidly evolving environment. These abilities are crucial for building efficient, maintainable, and user-friendly apps that work seamlessly across platforms.

What is the difference between Compose Multiplatform vs Android Developer?

AspectCompose MultiplatformAndroid Developer
Primary FocusCross-platform UI development for multiple platformsAndroid app development primarily for Android devices
Required SkillsKnowledge of Kotlin, Compose, multi-platform architectureJava/Kotlin, Android SDK, UI design for Android
Work EnvironmentDeveloping apps for Android, iOS, desktop, and webDeveloping Android-specific applications
Industry UsageUsed by companies targeting multiple platforms with a single codebaseUsed by companies focusing solely on Android apps

Compose Multiplatform enables developers to create UI for multiple platforms using Kotlin, whereas Android Developers focus on building applications specifically for Android devices. While both roles require Kotlin knowledge, Compose Multiplatform emphasizes cross-platform architecture, making it suitable for developers aiming for multi-platform deployment. Android Developers typically specialize in Android SDK and UI design for Android, working within the Android ecosystem.

Job description

What You Will Do
  • Own iOS from architecture to App Store: Design, build, and ship our native iOS application in Swift and SwiftUI - navigation, state management, offl ine behavior, background sync, push, and the release and distribution pipeline for enterprise customers.
  • Extend to Android and shared code: Establish the cross-platform strategy that lets a small team cover both platforms without shipping two divergent products, and build the shared business, sync, and data layers that back it.
  • Make AI agents feel native on a phone: Turn streaming, long-running, and asynchronous agent workfl ows into responsive mobile interactions - real-time updates, graceful degradation on poor networks, and a UI that stays fast while agents work in the background.
  • Build for enterprise-grade constraints: Implement SSO, secure local storage, MDM-friendly distribution, and the observability and crash reporting needed to run mission-critical software inside the world''s largest organizations.
  • Set the bar for mobile quality: Own performance, accessibility, automated testing, and CI/CD for mobile, and partner closely with design and backend to defi ne the APIs the client actually needs.
What We Are Looking For
  • 3+ years of professional mobile engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and maintaining production iOS applications that real users depend on.
  • A bachelor''s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, or a heavily related technical fi eld.
  • Deep iOS fluency: You are strong in Swift, know SwiftUI and UIKit and when each is the right tool, and understand concurrency, memory, and the app lifecycle well enough to debug the problems that only show up on real devices.
  • Genuine cross-platform capability: You have built for Android or with a multiplatform stack - Kotlin Multiplatform, Compose Multiplatform, React Native, or Flutter - and can reason about the trade-off between shared code and native fi delity rather than defaulting to one answer.
  • Product instincts on top of engineering depth: You care about how the thing feels, push back on designs that will not work on a phone, and can translate ambiguous requirements into a shipped experience.
  • Comfort with distributed backends: You have worked against real APIs at scale - sync, caching, confl ict resolution, auth, and offl ine-fi rst data - and can hold your own in a design discussion with backend engineers.
  • An ownership mentality: You are a driver, not a passenger. You take pride in your work, take accountability for the product on the platform you own, and are comfortable moving quickly in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • A strong team player: You are easy to work with, open to constructive feedback, and enthusiastic about learning. You know how to collaborate, raise the bar for the engineering team, and can ''disagree and commit'' to keep the team moving forward.
Who You Are
  • You are the person who owns mobile at the company - not a ticket-taker on someone else''s roadmap. You are comfortable being the only mobile engineer in the room and the most senior voice on the platform.
  • You are a high-agency, self-driven builder who thrives in fast-paced environments and takes massive ownership of your work.
  • You value true collaboration over ego - you know how to disagree and commit, and you do your best work as part of a highly aligned, fast-moving team.
