Regulatory Compliance Engineer - Sovos
Open Position
Regulatory Compliance Engineer
Regulatory Analysis & Design• Full-Time• United States
Build your future with Sovos.
If you're seeking a career where innovation meets impact, you've come to the right place. As a global leader, Sovos is transforming tax compliance from a business requirement to a force for growth while revolutionizing how businesses navigate the ever-changing regulatory landscape.
At Sovos, we're dedicated to more than just solving compliance challenges -- we're committed to making a positive and lasting difference in everything we do. Our teams operate on the modern edge of digital technology, working not only to solve complex business challenges but also to enrich our personal, professional, and local communities.
Our purpose-built systems provide the tools you need to thrive in a world where governments demand increased visibility, faster reporting and greater control over business processes. Excited about the possibilities? So are we!
Don't worry if you don't check all the boxes -- apply anyway! We're focused on hiring the right people, not just the "right" resume. It's not about what you've done elsewhere; it's all about what you're capable of doing here.
The Role
At Sovos, we're transforming tax compliance from a business requirement into a force for growth. As a Regulatory Compliance Engineer, you'll play a central role in validating the quality and accuracy of the rates and rules contained in our tax calculation engines and related products. With multiple updates every month, you'll be part of the team ensuring our solutions work flawlessly for thousands of businesses relying on us for compliance.
More specifically, you will:
  • Own and continuously improve our mission-critical tax content quality assurance process as part of a dedicated team.
  • Develop deep subject matter expertise in indirect tax rules, understanding how they work, what they're intended to do, and how they should behave in software.
  • Understand how tax rules are translated into tax engine logic and identify where intent and reality diverge.
  • Create and review suites of test scenarios including unit, automated, and regression tests designed to validate the accuracy and completeness of content changes.
  • Work with team members to design and implement AI-assisted testing workflows to expand coverage and reduce manual effort across the content quality assurance process.
  • Leverage AI tools to identify patterns, anomalies, and opportunities for process optimization in large datasets and complex testing scenarios.
  • Collaborate with Product, Development, Client Support, Professional Services, and Compliance Services teams to enable the continued success of our content quality assurance process.
  • Support our participation in certified compliance programs such as Streamlined Sales Tax, ensuring the completeness and accuracy of the data we supply to state governments.
  • Support coordination of our two primary external audits (SOC 1 Type 2) of our tax content and sales tax filing processes.

What We're Looking For
  • Genuine interest in understanding the complexity of indirect tax compliance.
  • Academic or work experience with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Academic or work experience with SQL and/or Python.
  • Experience or interest in developing AI tools to streamline labor-intensive processes and workflows.
  • Comfort with AI-assisted workflows and a willingness to explore new technologies that enhance quality and efficiency.
  • Strong collaboration skills and an ability to work effectively across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and make sound prioritization decisions.
  • A persistent, detail-oriented mindset with the investigative skills to resolve discrepancies until they're fully understood.
  • A passion for accuracy and a commitment to excellence in all deliverables.
  • Due to client contractual obligations, the successful candidate will be asked to clear a background check and drug test upon hire.

The Process
We believe in a transparent and comprehensive hiring process. Here's what you might expect:
Stage 1: Regionally Specific Pre-Employment Assessments. We use them to mitigate bias in our process and give every applicant a fair shot.
Stage 2: Video Interview. We want to get a chance to meet as many qualified applicants as possible, and we know that resumes are only a piece of paper. This lets us get to know more about you, more than you see on paper.
Stage 3: Meeting with a Recruiter
Stage 4: Live Interviews with the Hiring Team
