Job description


The Assistant Category Manager (Tobacco) collects, analyzes, and interprets data related to tobacco category sales, market trends, customer behavior, and regulatory considerations with the goal of maximizing sales, margin, and overall category performance. This role requires a tactical, detail-oriented professional with strong analytical and project management skills who can translate complex data into actionable insights. The ACM provides data-driven recommendations on assortment, pricing, promotional strategies, and merchandising to support category growth while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.

The successful candidate will bring experience with category management processes and a strong understanding of tobacco retail dynamics, including manufacturer partnerships, trade programs, and evolving consumer preferences. A customer-first mindset and the ability to make sound, data-driven decisions are essential. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside a collaborative team of professionals who are passionate about delivering strong results and optimizing the tobacco category.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Achieve sales and margin targets as developed in the planning process.
  • Assist in development of and in implementing category plans throughout the network of stores.
  • Recap sales, funding and other reporting around promotions with strong Analytical background.
  • Work in the field at new and remodel stores making sure the department is set up correctly.
  • Assist in the development of marketing and promotional programs for items and categories.
  • Develop and implement merchandising tools including planograms, racking, and displays.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with Operations and Merchandising team to ensure precise implementation of category offers.
  • Partner with other Category Managers and Stakeholders to optimize merchandising strategies and overall store performance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications/Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, or related field
  • Experience in the retailing or convenience store industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of category management principles in the small format retail environment, ideally in convenience stores.
  • A thorough understanding of the retail customer and how they engage and shop small retail formats.
  • Strong analytical skills using a data-driven approach for strategic decision making.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite and other analytical tools.
  • An ability to be self-motivated and with a strong attention to detail.
  • A history of working well in teams and independently.
  • Strong time management skills to meet department and promotion deadlines.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, and twist; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects and controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • This position will typically be exposed to a standard office environment.
  • While supporting marketing initiatives onsite, environmental conditions the incumbent will be exposed to include heat, cold, allergen, noise, and fume/chemical/odor exposure from gasoline and cleaning chemicals.
