How much do compiler jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for compiler in Colorado is $21.88, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.15 and $25.53 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a compiler?

A compiler is a specialized computer program that translates source code written in a high-level programming language into machine code or another lower-level language that a computer can execute. This process allows developers to write code in languages like C++, Java, or Python, which are easier for humans to understand, and then have it converted into instructions that hardware can process. Compilers perform various tasks such as syntax analysis, optimization, and code generation to ensure the resulting program runs efficiently and correctly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a compiler?

To thrive as a Compiler Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, programming languages, and compiler theory, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like LLVM, GCC, and experience with languages such as C/C++ or Rust are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this field. These skills ensure the development of efficient, reliable compilers that support robust software and systems development.

What are the common challenges faced when working as a compiler engineer, and how can they be addressed?

Compiler Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing code for performance, ensuring compatibility across various hardware architectures, and maintaining the correctness of complex transformations. Debugging and diagnosing issues in the compilation process can be particularly intricate, requiring a strong understanding of both source and target languages. Collaborating closely with language designers and hardware engineers, as well as utilizing automated testing and profiling tools, helps address these challenges and results in more robust and efficient compilers.

What is the difference between Compiler vs Interpreter?

AspectCompilerInterpreter
FunctionTranslates entire code into machine language before executionTranslates code line-by-line during execution
SpeedFaster execution after compilationSlower due to real-time translation
UsageUsed in languages like C, C++Used in languages like Python, JavaScript
ErrorsErrors are found after compilationErrors are detected during execution
OutputProduces standalone executable filesRuns directly from source code

In summary, a compiler translates the entire program into machine code before execution, resulting in faster runtime and standalone files. An interpreter translates code line-by-line during execution, which can be slower but allows for easier debugging and dynamic execution. Both are essential in different programming environments depending on performance and development needs.

Job description

We are seeking a Principal Quantum Compiler Engineer in our Broomfield, CO Location.
As quantum hardware rapidly scales toward fault-tolerant systems, compiler technology is becoming one of the fundamental enablers of practical quantum computing.
At Quantinuum, our compiler team develops critical software that translates our users' groundbreaking quantum applications to hardware-specific operations that execute efficiently on our world-class hardware. We tackle some of the hardest compiler and optimization problems in quantum computing, including scalable routing across trapped-ion architectures, compilation for fault-tolerant quantum systems, and architecture-aware optimizations. With the support of physicists, quantum error correction (QEC) experts, and fellow compiler engineers, we co-design the software stack that will compile algorithms into tailored, executable instructions for our trapped-ion quantum computers. Through this work, we are building the compiler technologies that enable scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing on increasingly capable hardware.
In this hands-on technical leadership role, you will shape the compiler roadmap by architecting, prototyping, and evaluating technologies that advance the languages, tooling, and optimization strategies used to develop and execute programs efficiently on our quantum platforms. You will champion engineering standards and practices through direct technical contributions, feedback, and mentorship and influence how our compiler stack evolves to support increasingly capable quantum hardware. Working closely with key technical leaders, you will co-develop strategies that will enable execution of fault tolerant quantum programs at scale.
Through your contributions, you will be a key driver of the strategy shaping key compiler technologies powering the next generation of fault-tolerant quantum computers that will ultimately solve problems beyond the reach of classical computing.
All applicants for placement in safety-sensitive positions will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug test.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Drive strategic vision and leadership in architecture and implementation of compilers targeting advanced quantum computer capabilities.
  • Collaborate with industry leaders, academic researchers, and standards organizations to shape emerging quantum programming and compiler standards.
  • Mentor and develop technical leadership within the compiler team to build long-term organization capability and architectural vision.
  • Architect and contribute to advanced compiler design projects and development including:
    • Compiler front-end (quantum languages)
    • Back-end (machine-specific targeting)
    • Optimization passes (quantum circuit optimization and classical optimization) operating on both classical and quantum operations
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration and technical leadership while working with a diverse team including physicists and other engineering disciplines to solve complex problems.
  • Champion code quality and engineering excellence, leading by example while contributing high quality code in an R&D and rapid prototyping environment.

YOU MUST HAVE:
  • Master's degree minimum
  • Minimum 8+ years of industry or post-graduate experience in an engineering, lab, or R&D environment.
  • Minimum 8+ years of hands-on experience developing compiler infrastructure and technologies.
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.

WE VALUE:
  • Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant field, or equivalent demonstrated experience in compiler research and development
  • Strong understanding of compiler architecture and design principles, with the technical judgment to drive architectural decisions across complex compiler systems.
  • Significant experience extending or developing compiler infrastructure using LLVM or comparable compiler frameworks.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading the development of innovative algorithmic solutions to complex optimization problems and clearly communicating design decisions, tradeoffs, and impact to technical and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate architectural direction, explain key tradeoffs, and align short-, medium-, and long-term plans to deliver sustainable success.
  • Experience with Rust or a strong understanding of Rust's core technical principles and design philosophies.
  • Experience or familiarity with Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation
  • Experience as a technical lead in an academic or industry R&D team focused on development of compiler technologies
  • A track-record of contribution to open-source and commercial projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of algorithms, including tree, graph, SAT, machine learning and other algorithms
  • Experience with MLIR or other high-level IR
  • Experience with development of application-specific and heuristic algorithms, especially where exact/optimal solutions are computationally intractable
  • Proficiency with software testing and deployment tools
