Job description

The Agency

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.

The Program

The Employment Hub is a dynamic, trauma-informed, and client-centered program designed to support adults who are currently involved in, or have had previous involvement with, the criminal justice system. Recognizing the complex barriers faced by this population, the Hub offers a comprehensive range of employment-focused services that promote personal growth, economic independence, and long-term community reintegration.

The Position

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Occupational Therapist to join our Employment Hub Program. This outreach-based role works closely with the team to support clients transitioning from correctional settings into the community and into successful employment. The successful candidate will apply occupational therapy models to address client needs related to mental health, addictions, physical health, and daily living.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments (cognition, addictions, physical health, daily living).
  • Develop and implement client-centered intervention plans.
  • Facilitate referrals and liaise with healthcare providers and community resources.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to program development and evaluation.
  • Support clients in gaining and maintaining employment.
  • Facilitate group sessions to increase client ability to enter the workforce.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy and registration with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists.
  • Experience working with marginalized populations, including those with mental health and addiction challenges.
  • Strong understanding of community resources and healthcare systems.
  • Excellent communication, assessment, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Brain Story Certification considered an asset.

Your past does not define your future. A criminal record will not disqualify you from employment with us; we evaluate each application individually.

Applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.
