Job description

Bayshore HealthCare is one of Canada's leading providers of home and community health care services and is a Canadian-owned company. With locations across the country, including more than 80 home care offices, 11 pharmacies, and over 100 community care clinics, Bayshore has more than 18,000 staff members and provides care to over 350,000 clients annually.

We are currently seeking a compassionate, energetic, and engaging Community Support Worker to provide companionship and meaningful community-based support to an autistic child. This role is focused on fostering social interaction, community inclusion, recreation, and positive engagement through shared activities and relationship-building.

The successful candidate will build a positive, supportive relationship with the client while encouraging participation in recreational, educational, and community activities. This position is strictly companionship-focused and does not involve personal care responsibilities.

Please note: This position is anticipated to begin as soon as possible and currently requires support twice per week for 3-hour shifts, with preferred availability during evening hours from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one companionship and meaningful engagement to an autistic child in the home and community.
  • Foster positive social interaction, communication, confidence, and community participation.
  • Accompany the client to community-based activities, including visits to the library, recreational programs, and other age-appropriate outings.
  • Participate actively alongside the client in activities such as reading, crafts, games, and other engaging recreational opportunities.
  • Encourage exploration of interests, hobbies, and skills in a supportive and inclusive manner.
  • Build a respectful, trusting, and positive relationship while promoting the client's strengths and interests.
  • Support community inclusion and participation in a safe, engaging, and enjoyable way.
  • Maintain professional communication with the family and Bayshore team members regarding activities and observations.
  • Follow established care plans and document services as required.

Education

  • Community Support Worker Diploma, Educational Assistant Certificate, Child and Youth Care Diploma, or equivalent education is considered an asset.
  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Relevant education in Human Services, Social Services, Autism Support, Child and Youth Care, Recreation, Education, or a related field is considered an asset.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting children or youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or other developmental disabilities.
  • Experience facilitating recreational, educational, and community-based activities.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Patient, energetic, creative, and enthusiastic approach to supporting children.
  • Ability to actively engage in activities and encourage participation.
  • Ability to work independently while following individualized support plans.
  • Experience using person-centred, strengths-based, and neurodiversity-affirming approaches is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in community support, respite, recreation, education, childcare, or behavioural support roles is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are considered strong assets.

Additional Requirements

  • Comfortable participating in community outings and recreational activities.
  • Ability to engage in active play, crafts, reading, games, and other interactive activities.
  • Availability for two 3-hour shifts per week.
  • Preferred availability between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
  • Ability to develop positive rapport while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Female staff preferred to meet client and family preferences.
